Because someone is a good athlete he good should get special or different treatment than his Academy brothers? This place rants about pampered athletes playing "children games" being put on pedestals.
Dude, just stop.
This was a waiverable exception for ALL academy athletes up until right now. There are waivers for tons of things in the military for everyday people who want to serve. Waivers for medical, family situations, age requirements …all kinds of things.
Because unlike you, the military understands that the world isn’t black and white (figuratively and literally).
EDIT: And you should be slapped upside your head for comparing this dude to wife-beating, law-breaking Brittney Griner. Nobody is asking to turn international criminals loose so he can get what he wants. You sound foolish.

Yeah mid-late first round is usually $10-15m for 4 years and he’d get $6-7m in signing bonus
It’s a shame if he has to leave the school but he can get rich and serve his country in other ways

This is the military. You gave up your free will when you signed up to be secure financially for 8-10 years. You can't have your cake and eat it too. You made a choice.

Vote Democrat, get Democrats.
Nothing gets through this Congress without the support of Democrats.

Congressman Gallagher is correct. He had an opportunity to transfer out and chose not to.
Not really.
When the time came for Carter to make that decision, there was an avenue available for him to go to the NFL after graduation. Now, months away from the draft, they’re saying there isn’t. That would have been good info for him to have when he decided to stay.
Plus, the congressman is pretending like there is someone out there who will never serve because Carter “took up an appointment”. That someone could have gone the ROTC or OCS path. He’s making an emotional argument with no basis in reality.

Correct, the only reason that got put in is because another Dim is butthurt that Trump did something, so they have to undo it

Pretty sure the amendment adding this section was done by a Republican.
You people are insane sometimes
ETA - Yes Rep. Gallagher (I see he was mentioned). Now imagine being so ignorant you would blame Democrats. Wow.

Bingo. This is what a lot of people here are missing.
Altering commitments isn’t some unheard of thing in the military. Palace Chase in the AF allows people to convert their remaining active duty commitment to an ANG/Reserve commitment. And in theory it’s available to everyone (as long as you meet the requirements of course).
Carter still wants to serve, he just wants to do it differently, and the military has always allowed for this.

At this point he cant just leave the academy to prepare for the draft. When you attend your first class your junior year you are now committed to Uncle Sam. If he leaves the academy before graduation he will be reassigned to a regular Army unit as an enlisted soldier.

That’s not what they’re saying. They’re saying he should be required to fulfill his obligations. Then he can go to the NFL.
Randy Shannon, Mark Richt, and Tommy Tubberville used to host training camps overseas for deployed servicemen. Randy offered a scholarship to the University of Miami to an enlisted sailor and command denied his request for discharge to attend college and play football. Not exactly the same situation, but Carter isn’t a special case and many people have been denied opportunities as a result of military commitments.

Did the majority of Republicans in Congress vote for this bill?
What about the majority of Democrats in Congress?
ETA: Downvoters hate that this simple truth easily breaks through their obfuscation.

Ok, give us a valid reason this was snuck into a Rick Scott authored bill, by a fellow republican. You think this caveat was some sort of bargaining chip for bipartisan support or what?

Why can’t he go pro first then go active duty? This has been allowed for years so why is it now a problem?

but Carter isn’t a special case
I agree, plenty of service academy grads have been allowed to peruse profession careers. And as I’ve mentioned before, there are waivers for all kinds of things in the military. Commitments aren’t just altered for athletes (see the Air Force’s Palace Chase program).
Also, those guys you mentioned were already active duty in the middle of assignments (presumably). If Carter were trying to do this two years after he commissioned while stationed in Korea or somewhere, I’d tell him tough rocks too.

I know a guy who did ROTC at LSU for a year He was a junior so he signed his commitment immediately (cadet paperwork is basically enlisted paperwork). He decided it wasn’t for him after that year, told the cadre, and was issued a DD-256 (honorable discharge) and had to sign a promissory note to pay back that year’s worth of tuition.
I guess it could be different at the service academies but I assumed it would be the same deal?

Honest question, is the kid OK with this? Those academy graduates are often times wired differently.
He is “upset”. In my opinion, players currently in the service academies should be grandfathered in under the 2019 law.

I have no idea how it works for ROTC. I just know it works at the academy, or at least how it worked 30 years ago. When you show up for your first class junior year you are now property of Uncle Sam.

I completely understand the commitment part of the argument. He knew what he signed up for. However, the rules when he had to make his final commitment going into his junior year changed right before he has the opportunity to go to the NFL. Making this effective immediately seems unfair to someone who make a decision based on the fact the NFL would be an option to him.
The logical compromise would be anyone who made the commitment after 2019 until now would be held to those standards and rules. He’ll still honor his commitment over his NFL career is completed, and I feel like having a guy in the NFL championing the Army could be the most positive marketing tool the Army has had in a while.
