Exactly what it was. I've also been reading about since April, so I'm actually familiar with the facts. Dude wasn't clearing brush, at all. He was running amok in some sort of psychotic state, damaging neighbor's properties when he was confronted.

If you go full screen on the video and stop it a few times you can see a lot more context.
The defense of the shoot will be:
1. he was a well known bad guy with a violent history.
2. in the video you can see if you pause it full screen the axe is down by his side, after being told to drop it multiple times he raises it up like he is preparing to throw it just before he is shot.
Cop certainly knew who he was dealing with, probably shouldn't have confronted the guy until the other officers that were very close behind were in position. Not the best shoot, but not as bad as some are making it out once you consider the background on the suspect.

I don’t know the backstory here BUT that looks bad. WTF was he gonna do to that cop from that far away with an ax? He didn’t even lunge toward the cop or anything. That cop was just itching to shoot someone.

You’d have to be pretty stupid to taunt cops like that.
Regardless, Bad shoot IMO

That officer was not in any sort of danger. He should fry for that
True and he sounded pretty nonchalant when he called in shots fired. Damn

Its all easy to say when you are not in the situation.
If you are outside clearing brush, minding your business and a cop comes a long, since you are not doing anything wrong your reaction isn't going to be "let me put down my ax".
Im sure the police didn't want to kill the guy. I don't know for sure, I have no idea actually, but my first thought is that the deputy hasn't been fully trained properly or lacks experience on the job? Just the idea of being on your own property doing work and a cop comes up and shoots and kills you is insane, but life is a ticking time bomb.
Anyway, this isn't the situation to blame on the person who got shot.

Without more information (like why the cops were called in the first place), that looks like a bad shot on the cop.
That being said, if I’m the dude and cops have guns drawn on me telling me to drop the axe, I’m dropping it and explaining what I’m doing. I’m not gonna be defiant and raise the axe up. That’s just not smart, even if you’re on your property doing nothing wrong. Put that shite down and sort out your trampled rights later (which were trampled by that cop IMO). But at least you’re alive.

Yesterday I saw a YouTube video of a cop pulling a gun on a college student picking up trash outside his apt/dorm. Nobody gets shot but what's interesting is when he calls for backup he refers to the trash grabber as a blunt object(6 min. mark) immediately putting this person in danger. Here if you want to see it.

If they can show that the cop knew the background on the guy he shot and it accurately reflected his potential danger then the cop is likely to be in the relative clear.
Not that he shouldn't have been smarter about when to approach and when to shoot. It would have been better if he waited for additional cops and it is at least debatable about whether he needed to shoot.
The brutal reality is the victim being a dumb white guy instead of a dumb black guy probably keeps this mostly out of the news and the cop mostly out of trouble.

Boy this thread title aged well.
Axe you once, shame on you. Axe you twice, shame on me.

So someone’s background should get them murdered?

Lots of people are pretty good at throwing axes these days. It really isn't that difficult. They'll even let you get totally wasted while you throw axes in a bar.

Ah yeah, because flinging an ax at a wood backdrop and hitting a moving target from 20+ yards out are comparable.

You’re a dumb fricking count.

Man listen bro…. Bang dead
Cop should spend time in prison for that one the lack of an attempt to de-escalate the situation on the cops end is disturbing.

Firing a 9MM at a wood backdrop and hitting a moving target from 20+ yards out are respectively comparable.
