Talking about actual costs to the dealer, not the sales price of the car. I didn't make the 100s of percent claim but if you figure what they may actually have invested in a car that is sold as soon as it hits the lot they may make multiples of that in profit.

Go over the holdback period where they have to make financial payments on the cars, they have substantial carrying costs and liability, and then their potential ROI starts dropping fast.

Don’t be afraid to walk out.

In March I bought my kid a 2022 loaded civic. Bought at Ascension Honda, they were the only dealer within 150 miles that had the car. We paid about 3k over but they gave us all the $ on the trade. Recently the car got totaled and I went back to them again. Insurance gave us about $4k over plus TTL. They offered either $4k in “accessories” or straight $2k over sticker. I bought on that because everyone wanted a bit more over sticker. We had a handshake at that price no extras. Well I get the invoice and it has $500 for vin etching. They let me walk over that. Since I was paying cash and didn’t have a trade they said that’s where they were stuck and let me walk.
