Used F250 diesel - opinions

Current truck is 2016 king ranch F150 with 98k miles. Need to upgrade to F250 to tow boat, and found same exact truck I currently have now (color, trim, etc) all exactly the same but a 2017 F250, kicker is it has 200k miles. After trade in I’d be on the hook for just under $10k for the swap, which is pretty minimal all things considered. Doesn’t seem terrible but the milage scares me. Thoughts on a 200k mile 6.7l ford diesel? Part of me hates paying to double my milage, but also thinking I could grab extended warranty to negate that and still get a decent deal.
Or alternatively there is a 2018 lariat ultimate pkg model for $55k with 80k miles that I’ve been looking at as well. Would be my first diesel, so hoping someone can sway me in the right direction. Not opposed to spending more for the newer/less milage 2018, but if there is no reason to avoid the higher milage truck it would be nice to save some money. Kind of feel like I’d regret losing my king ranch trim though.

How big is this boat and how often are we talking about pulling it? Diesels have this reputation of lasting longer than gas engines but that’s the old days.
Modern diesels do not last any longer plus higher maintenance and fuel costs really makes owning a diesel not worth it unless you’re pulling long distances very regularly. Add the fact this truck already has 200k miles

Nope

200k miles is not a lot on the engine it self. But the rest of the truck has alot of wear and tear. The transmission, front end parts, cab bushings, brakes. Has fuel system ever been replaced? Would pay for inspection by a legit shop if you're concerned. Make sure shop can do a thorough inspection.

My boat is 35ft weights about 13k lbs when full of fuel. Figure I’d be towing probably 6 times a year or so to bring it up the road for maintenance, etc. Currently have to swap trucks with buddy to tow it. I also work on offshore boat wiring on the side, so being able to pick up boats and bring them to shop is a huge plus as well. The 200k miles really scares me, but have always heard with diesels that milage in that range shouldn’t necessarily scare you.
My first thought is 2018 with <80k miles, just looking for someone to convince me that that is the smart decision.

I have a 2017 250 with the 6.7 in xlt trim. I bought it new in April of 17 and it currently has 142xxx miles . I change the fluids/filters (oil, fuel, transmission, diffs, and transfer case) by the book and only use motorcraft filters. Hope I don’t jinx it but this has been the best truck I’ve owned. Way more than enough power and gets good mileage as well. It’s quiet and comfortable. I stay on top of all the maintenance myself and feel that’s the key to owning these trucks .

It isn't what you want to hear but if you must have a ford, get a gas burner. The 6.2's run forever regardless of how much weight you hang behind them. It won't do it in a hurry, but it will do it forever and cost far less doing it.
I personally wouldn't buy a used modern diesel without a well documented service history.

You could rent an f250 from Home Depot for like $100. 6 x a year will cost you around $700 probably. Cheaper than buying a truck.

Buy a used 6.2 or 7.3 Gasser F350.

This, 13k lbs even once a month is the obvious choice for a gas engine.
The only reason I’d have a truck with 200k miles is that I put those miles on it.

As a diesel owner, I've had nothing but problems with the DEF system and if I could do it again I'd get the gas burner.
It's also only a tow pig and not my daily driver

Find an XL trim gas motor.
6.2 or 7.3 gasser.
I have the 6.2 with 3.73s. Bought a grey XL 4wd with like 20k miles for 26k out the door. Only have 70k on it now. Does everything i want to do and pulls everything I'll pull.
You can even move up to some 4.30s if you want.
The 7.3 is quicker with the 10 speed but my 6.2 has the 6 speed diesel transmission. Had it almost 5 years now and I've loved it.

Why don't you get a new 7.3 gas burner?

The 6.2 gasser I had for a while had 4.30 gears and it was badass. Had one with 3.73's after and it was better on the interstate, but it's a shame that 4.30's aren't the more common option.
IMO, the Ford 6.2 with the 6 speed and 4.30's is THE drive train to get in a 3/4 ton truck. If you NEED a diesel, you also NEED a dually 1 ton.
The 6.2 isn't going to win any races through mountain passes, but its damn boring reliability and way more affordable than any diesel both up front and during ownership.

Hmmmm sounds like I need to rethink things then

The EPA killed any advantages diesels had for the average truck owner. If you aren't towing daily get a gasser.

It's just a whole lot of money and questionable reliability just to be able to drag stuff over the intercoastal bridge without mashing the gas to the floor.
If its going to REALLY piss you off to hear the truck working hard to pull that heavy arse boat up an overpass or to get passed up on the interstate because you can't pull it 80mph without running out of gas, the diesel might be worth it.
Buying a used diesel, I would probably shop for a ram 1 ton high output with a CP3 fuel pump, 2018 or older. Those aren't as finicky with maintenance and the high outputs have an aisin transmission which is great.
I really don't like the idea of buying a used Ford diesel with 200k miles. If it was well cared for it can go damn near forever, but you don't know if the previous owner dumped DEF in the fuel and decided he needed to make it someone else's problem.

They fixed the CP4 fuel pump issue. I wouldn’t buy a 2020-22 ram without knowing the owner changed it out. But if you buy new now you’re good to go.

I’m interested in your current truck
