Was that a bullshite call ? I sure thought so .,

It was close…looked like it could go either way depending on the angle…I personally thought the hand was moving forward

The arm may have been going forward, but the ball went backwards.

even florida knows that was a fumble.

Should have stayed with call on field

When the ball left his hand it was going backwards. It’s either a lateral or fumble. I’ll go to my grave believing that.

Did Perkins make contact with the ball? If so, it doesn’t matter if it went backwards. That alone would not make it a fumble.

The only way he could be ruled not a fumble is if the pass was batted down by Perkins causing it to go backwards. Richardson left the field believing it was a fumble.

Yeah. There should be a rule like “if you hand is still behind your head, it’s a fumble”. The ball direction should be telling to the refs. Similar to block in the back falling on back or stomach.

Definitely not indisputable evidence to overturn it and it appeared to me that he hit his arm before the arm ever started going forward.
I also thought Thomas showed enough control for his catch to stand as called on the field. Weird overturned calls there with little to say it was indisputable based on what was called on the field.

What's funny is either the next play or the play after was a backwards screen pass that skipped off the ground and the refs blew it dead. I couldn't believe what I was watching
Between that and the refs taking 5 minutes to review what down it was in Bama/Tenn it wasn't the best of days for the refs

I think it was an empty hand when it went forward.

Now that we’ve won, I do Kinda think it was the right call…
Hand started had JUST a started to come forward and Perkins punched it out

All I know is that closing speed Perkins has is amazing

This is what happened and the refs got it right according to the letter of the rules.

real speed fumble
one of the first three replays I saw ball move forward about 2 inches max, said I'd have to overturn.
never saw that angle again though, the more it replayed. the more I thought fumble

It was the worst review since PP interception against Bama

quote:The rule is that if there is a backwards pass and the players don't try to pick it up or the player doesn't try to advance it, the play is dead at that spot. That's why it went from 15-to-go to 20-to-go. Tess and McElroy were too busy talking about where UT and Bama should be ranked to explain what was happening on the field.

There clearly wasn’t enough to reverse the call IMO. Same could’ve been said if the reverse was actually called on the field.
That being said, the Roughing Penalty on the INT was a pretty BS call as well.

I agree. That was as on the borderline of pass/fumble as you can get, but they should have just said it stands and stuck with the call on the field.
