Our secondary is day and night compared to when Corey Raymond was here

We went from tall skinny DBs that Corey Raymond likes to bigger DBs who like to hit and play aggressive. The last few years they looked small and they were thrown like rag dolls. We don’t have blown coverages like we did the last few years. Sevyn Banks looked good yesterday in his first action and we get Joe Foucha back this week. I like what coach Steeples and coach Cooks have done so far and you can see they are being coached!

It's definitely a physical secondary at ever level.
Tackling has been superb

Yes, tackling is so much better right now and defense as a whole is exciting. Matt House and the whole defensive staff is doing a great job!

Banks still has a redshirt to use. I was kind of hoping they would save him.
He can still play in 4 games, though, so maybe.

Dude that was more because of scheme. Raymond would be great under this culture with Kelly and the DC. Steeples is great too though. I can see why Kelly loves him. Cooks is also good.

Why does it seem that all the blame for secondary issues the last few years get laid on Raymond when we had dedicated safeties coaches his last few years? Not saying the CBs didn’t have issues, but still.
Also, a lot of the CBs we’re playing now are 3-4 years into college. They’re more physically mature than some of the guys Raymond was playing. Not to mention some of his guys came in pretty good-sized (Sting and McGlothern of some of the recent guys), and I’d say we “hit” on some of his skinny recruits (Ward and Flott).

I always got blasted for this take, but I always maintained we kept Raymond around for his recruiting, not necessarily his coaching.

Also the scheme/conditioning were bad these last few years

Corey Raymond’s recruiting was not great at the end. It was best for both parties to get a new start

Raymond was a big factor in the demise of DBU because of the "problems" he created on the staff and with the players when he was not named defensive coordinator; especially after leading the players strike from practice a few years ago! He could not have fit in with the current staff of Coach BK!

It's less finesse man coverage types and more brutes that love to tackle and play near the line.
There are benefits to both and I'd still love to have one sick athlete lockdown CB, which we usually have but don't really right now.
They'll get big time tested against UT and obviously Bama with their speed and willingness to throw it around the field.
Regardless, the real thing that is making happy is the improvement from week to week for the defense as a whole. Great coaching from House.

Play a decent passing attack with as much talent at WR and QB. Tenn will tell you IF they have made any strides. Pass rush also plays a huge role.
I wanted Raymond gone for years but was hammered on here. I just don’t know if I’m ready to say they are better.

I remember an anonymous SEC coach saying this would be the worst LSU secondary in over a decade before the season started.

Florida’s secondary looked bad yesterday. Lots of blown coverages.

Tennessee gave up 453 yards passing to a guy who was averaging 141 passing per game prior to it.

I thought Miss St was going to put over 300-400 yards passing on us a few weeks ago. We will definitely see how they stack up against Tennessee in a few weeks.

Raymond had nightmares about Hendon Hooker last night.

Raymond was lazy and garbage his last several seasons here. And to think there was a big group on here who wanted to make him defensive coordinator. Some even insane enough to say head coach. Florida taking him away was one of the best things that could have happened.

We have what we could get to some degree. Realistically the world of college offense is probably such that you might be better off with guys that can tackle really well and are smart and work toward affecting the pass game more with pressure schemes. You could start a DB group of all freshman year Stingleys…they still can’t cover forever and will get beat if you don’t pressure the QB. Smart physical DBs who can tackle really well isn’t a horrible plan.
…but I’d still want at least one cover stud.
