What is killing my St Augustine?

3 weeks ago it was beautiful....
Now large brown patches of dead nothing! And VBW and doveweed taking over.
Oddly, the centipede I have is doing just fine.
Root rot, too much rain and heat, fungus....?

Yep - possibly all of the above? If you can post photos, from distance and close up, ronk is very good at identifying disease and insect issues from good photos.
Centipede is more tolerant, though not immune, than St Augustine to many of the lawn fungal/diseases issues. The constant/frequent rain not allowing lawns to dry is a tinder box for lawn disease issues.

do you have any bug sightings? Moths? Or chewed leaves? Bugs are bad now also.
Could be fungus for sure.
I've got minor fungus and bad bug problems in mine. Put down a granular insecticide about 2 weeks ago that must have been washed away as my bugs are back in a bad way. I'm reapplying this evening.

I've alternated bug stuff, I've alternated fungus stuff, and my St. Aug is still F'ed in some places. The runners die and turn brown. The roots are black. Then the weeds take over.
Metairie area.

Root rot for sure. Round up the weeds and resod. I’d consider raising the area if it’s low. Maybe aerate after new sod is laid and fully rooted.

I posted your photos for others to view. ronk has provided you the disease and recommendation to correct. Here is an article on it. Take All Root Rot

Thanks ronk....I will kill it and re-sod with centipede. The yard drains well and has large elevation changes.
I am inundated with a mixture of VBW and Doveweed as well.
Fixing to hit it with Celsius.
I have lived in BR my whole life, and never had yard issues like the last several years.

Your soil changes over time. It gets more compacted, microbes become or less prevalent, excessive rain comes at times when your lawn is unable to handle stress. Thousands of different scenarios to consider.
If you are able and willing to do it I’d have your lawn core aerated and top dressed with sand. Mason sand only. That will help to filter excess water.
