The truth is that A&M being “sooooooooo rich” is a meme started by their own fans to compete with big bro Texas who actually has a lot of incredibly rich alumni compared to other schools.
Eh, A&M doesn't have much top end, but they're a top engineering school (might even be the best if you include quality and quantity) that largely sends their alumni to low cost of living areas. They have A LOT of ~60 year old alumni looking at their retirement accounts and seeing a number somewhere around 8 million, and if you put $50k here and there from them into a collective it adds up fast.
Also, you mentioned it and then pretended it's irrelevant, but buy in is the single most important factor here, and they have it. If it was just based off of who has the richest alumni, the college football landscape would be Stanford (who knows how many successful Silicon Valley start up founders) > Michigan (Larry Page) > Oregon (Phil Knight) > Michigan State (Dan Gilbert), and that's just not reality. In reality LSU became a national power the second LSU decided they were willing to put money into becoming one, and Georgia did the same thing when they hired Kirby Smart.
