I need one or more of you sober OT'ers to hold my hand and lead me through the valley of the shadow of sobriety. I have to do it. It's time.

I was a heavy drinker (15ish beers/day at the end) for a while and finally gave it up in December 2020 for a variety of reasons. I subsequently lost 35lbs, stopped snoring almost entirely and had some chronic back pain almost entirely disappear. So there were lots of health benefits. But problems from drinking will still need to be addressed.

Depending on your use/abuse level, you may experience different levels of withdrawal both now and in waves in the future. These can manifest as emotional instability, depression, irritability, etc... I had episodes that hit over a year after i stopped. Your mileage may vary here.

As far as maintaining sobriety and replacing drinking, there are 2 areas that were most difficult for me to address: 1. The habitual nature of holding and drinking something throughout the day. For this, la croix, spindrift and various other carbonated water options replace the actions (holding a cold can, opening a can, actually consuming liqiids) associated with drinking. 2. Drinking something with food that isn't sweet or caffeinated but has flavor. For this, I have used the previously mentioned beverages but also some of the craft Non-alcoholic beers. My personal favorite brewery is Athletic. Their NA beers taste like real beer and are brewed NA so they aren't removing alcohol at any point. Some staunch AA folks will say this is a dangerous path for alcoholics, but it's worked for me for 20 months through the most stressful period of my life (house flooded, had a second son, moved cities, new house flooded, shingles, etc....)

Good luck with it. You will notice your sobriety more than anyone else. I learned quickly that no one else cares if I drink.

When it comes to health, I don’t need someone to hold my hand to make sure I do what needs to be done. When you can’t give up alcohol when it’s causing health issues, that’s pretty damn childish

He just said it was life changing, which I infer to mean he is planning to give it up for his health.

That doesn't change the fact that being told to stop doing something you've done for decades on a regular basis is life changing.

My thoughts too.

#1 how fat do you have to be where weight is causing health issues?....Jesus christ get your shite together

#2 how fricking much do you have to be drinking that the doctor says you have to lose weight and cut alcohol? Damn bro, how often where you drinking slippy?

And how sad is it that giving up alcohol has people saying they would rather get a 2nd opinion likes its some big deal not to drink or only drink 5 or 6 times a year

Also how sad is it that he says he has to give up alcohol and Multiple people have brought up weed or gummies? Is some of yalls life so bad that you have to be on something or have some kid of high everyday?

Many of yall are some sad sacks of shite and have no self perception about it.

Get a Soda Stream. Drink that with just lemon, lime, any fruit juice. You’ll lose weight just by doing that.

You now have motivation to lose weight. Get a bunch of weight off then go on a bender.

Doctor told me the same thing earlier this year. Was devastated. I am a craft beer lover. I buckled down, downloaded an app called "myfitnesspal," started counting calories, and lost 40 lbs since February.

It was hard at first and I felt like I was gonna starve. After a couple of weeks, learning where to cut calories, learning food hacks to replace their high calorie counterparts, I now have it down to a science. I eat what I would consider to be a lot and I'm still losing weight.

Doctor was pleasantly surprised at my progress. I'm down to 1 blood pressure medication (was up to 4 at one point) and now, with the Doctor's consent, I have craft beer on occasion!

You can likely do the same. Kick your own arse and get back to what you love.

You position yourself as a health expert on here. Shouldn't we be asking you this?

I had elevated liver enzymes at 6'3 215 while I averaged 3-4 drinks a day, for whatever that's worth.

It's potentially related to a heart issue.
Continue to drink like you've been doing, in moderation. Knock back a few on weekend gamedays but cut out weekday drinking.

LOSE the WEIGHT and make that your main focus right now. Get that weight off over 3 months and then go back to the doc and see what he says about the heart issue.

I firmly believe 90% of your heart issue (high BP/cholesterol/high blood sugar) can be reversed when you shed those pounds.

I don't disagree on either, but a guy who involves himself in all things health and fitness not being able to comprehend the scale of health issues seems a bit forced for insult.

Had a similar situation last week but it was liver related. I drank pretty heavily until Sunday and cut it off Monday and have been to the gym the last 3 days in a row. First time working out like this in 30 years.

I might drink a little on the weekends, we’ll see.

Losing a loved one or a career is life changing. Getting arrested or diagnosed with cancer is life changing.

Being told to lay of the sauce for your health? Sorry I don’t consider that life changing but I also don’t abuse substances legal or otherwise

6'3 215 is fat on 85% of people. 3-4 drinks a day....you are or were an alcoholic or close to it. Jesus wtf does someone need to drink everyday for?

Look if you have to drink everyday or even every weekend then that is fricking sad.

You listed things that could come as a result of excessive drinking (loss, law troubles, health issues.)

Someone who drinks too much will change their life by quitting. This is an absurd argument you've gotten yourself in, all because you just wanted everyone to know this
