re: Acceptable Corkage

I'd say it depends on the type of bottles being brought in. I've only ever brought my own bottle when the bottle was a gift for a special occasion, and I've called ahead to make sure it's OK withe the restaurant. Most times the corkage fee was waived, and I left a substantial tip based on what I would have spent on a similar bottle so the server was taken care of. Couldn't imagine bringing in a bunch of bottles for a group. I'm also going to guess that your friend isn't bringing high end bottles since it sounds like he's cheap, but maybe I'm wrong.

You aren’t wrong.

I've always said for large group, MAYBE 2, and buy the rest. What do yall say?
I'd never bring more than two bottles of wine to a restaurant and a $25 corkage fee is expected. What I actually do is bring one bottle and then purchase the rest of the wine for the party from the restaurant.
IOW, your friend is being rude and disrespectful to the restaurant.

Is that customary? I’ve brought my own a handful of times but never shared with staff.
It's common to ask the somm if he'd like a taste. Generally they refuse.

Depends on the juice.
If I’m bringing in a bottle, it’s something the somm will want to taste.

I keep waiting for this joke to die so I can do a call back in 6 months but now it is just a turnoff.

IAmBatman made sure it didn’t die.

I don't bring anything but a very good bottle of wine to a restaurant. It depends on the restaurants policy as well.

Agreed.
To clarify, if I’m bringing a bottle, it’s at a restaurant here in town where I have a relationship with the somm and it’s a bottle we’ve talked about in the past. I rarely do so, though.
I more enjoy seeing what unique wines they’ve been able to acquire. A solid somm is a good friend to have.

Heaven forbid someone be an active contributor to their community. Let's remove them all from the gene pool so that only lazy people who don't care about community are left, great idea. Real movers and shakers don't claim to be...they just are. Envious people claim there's something wrong with being a mover and shaker.
Most importantly, only massive douches use the phrase at all.

If I can't have the whole bottle then I don't want any.

Sorry for having a well rounded vocabulary. Should I dumb it down for you next time?
Is there another term or phrase you’d suggest we use to describe a powerful person who initiates events and influences people?
Perhaps you’d be happier if I used the term “affluential” next time? But then again, affluential is typically defined as “wealthy” people while mover and shaker is not defined with wealthy. So mover and shaker would be more encompassing and is a much better term in that situation it was used.

You could just say the word 'important'.
"mover and shaker" simply smacks of faux-pretention and importance. To be fair that also describes the Louisiana politicians you were posting it about. Those that 'hold court' and the like.

So you’re saying my term was precisely the correct term to use?

Whether one likes or dislikes the phrase, I completely disagree with this.

It's a cringe phrase for sure.
