Step back. Let him be.
He’ll probably sneak out anyway

We told him no because the we didn't like the idea of a bunch of 15/16 yr olds out on the lake unsupervised - and we don't know the kid piloting, what type of boat, his parents etc. Also, they generally make bad decisions and act stupid when they're in a pack - as 15 yr olds do. Also, mid summer is busy on the lake.

Absolutely the right decision. The worst fights I had with my children always regarded not letting my kids participate in bad situations created by parents with no rules or standards...

Helicopter parenting or the right call?

good call

100% lots of drinking and there will be drugs happening too.

odds are high there might even be some sex as well

today isnt the same as when we were kids. we had moral boundaries and we knew not to cross them, those dont exist today, add that to the normal stupid shite kids do and its scary to think what will be going on.

chances are they will have lots of fun and you wont ever be aware of what went on, kinda like spring break where you know you really dont want to know what they get into and the thigs they do, but its a risk i would not advise taking

My dad used to tell me when there were certain things he wouldn't let me do.. And I would say "we will be safe".. He would always say "Its not you I don't trust, its other people".

I've seen the good and the bad of this. When I was in HS we had a family friend with a MasterCraft that we would take out without an "adult" but we were all hardcore wakeboarders and all had boating licenses. Since we didn't want to get that priveledge revoked we always made sure to take extremely good care of that thing.

On the other hand, I found a brand new Malibu floating in the middle of Lake Austin a few months ago (some kids had taken it up to their friends house and didn't tie it up well) and found the guy's info in the glove box to try and track him down. He said that that was the last time they got to take the boat out unsupervied.

There was also a grup of kids who rolled an X24 on Lake Lewisville over Memorial Day because of inexperience and lack of awareness.

shite can happen quickly on the water. I remember the story of those two teens on that boat out in Florida that were very experienced boaters for their age. Ended up dying from a pop up storm.

I had my own ski boat at 15 and we pretty much lived on it.

ETA: I live in the coast and am fine with my son going boating with his 15/16 yr old friends.

You left out the most crucial factor. Exactly how hot are the chicks?

Need pics in order to make an informed judgment.

I grew up boating and fishing, I could take the jonboat out solo as soon as I had a driver's licence, including with a friend, but my dad wouldn't let me take out the Sea Ray with friends until I was 18. It was likely the right move based on the lessons I learned/relearned after age 18 in that boat. I almost sunk that boat twice.

My dad let me and a few buddies take his boat out when we were 16. We caught the hell out of trout but couldn't figure out why the boat wouldn't get on plane. Turns out we were dragging the anchor all over Big Lake.

Our 15 year called and asked if he could go with his friends out on the lake without an adult. They are mostly 15 but it was a family boat of a 16 yr old - so he would be legal in SC. This would be out on a big lake near where we live - and there would've been around 6 of them.

I don't see why not, I mean, what's the worst that could happen, amirite?

Oh come on… what could a bunch teens with their retarded curly jewfros do wrong on the water?! They’d just go out there long enough to hit their vapes, make some new content for the social media pages, and possibly smoke a blunt.. let them live a little

Just kidding. Right call. If his friend was mature enough to handle a boat, you’d know. Don’t second guess yourself, you made the right choice

Lots of responsible 16 year old boaters. Punishing responsible kids because of the actions of irresponsible kids never ends well. Find out more about the kids going.

I grew up with a 15 hp Evinrude on a 13 foot flat boat that my dad let me use from the time I was 12. It wasn't until I was 18 that he let me take out the bay boat or pontoon boat with friends. I was able to gain his trust over a long period of time.

My kids did not get the opportunity I had but when my youngest turned 18 I purchased a Boston Whaler 160 Supersport for the kids for river recreation. 18 is a lot more mature than 16. I spent a week with them making them do every little boating detail ON THEIR OWN with my supervision at least 5 times before I allowed them to take the boat out without my supervision. They also had to take an online boating safety class (I never took). I totally trust them with the boat by themselves now.

I would have never trusted them at 16.

I have run boats inshore and offshore for years. My son grew up around the (14 now)... no way in hell I would allow that to happen.

Right call.

No is absolutely the right call. As a former boat owner I've seen so much stupidity on the water that I am surprised there aren't more boating deaths each year. No way I would let my 16 year old out there without an experienced driver.

Nope. Definitely the right call. We just started allowing our 15 year old and his pack take the jet skis out on their own this summer but they had to stay in our bay portion of the lake where they were at least visible from shore. It was still terrifying. At least they all got their boating certificate so they are legal.

My grandparents gave me their old ski boat when I was 16. Got my boating license. Me and my friends loaded it down every summer weekend. Great way to get all the hot chicks in the class out in their bikinis and get ‘em tipsy

Once we took the boat to Grenada lake for thunder on water weekend rented a cabin me and a good friend of mine and 2 chicks. Drank beer all day on the lake got back to hotel started drinking bourbon in preparation for a Brantley Gilbert and Colt Ford concert at Partners night club. Over 1,000 in a bar that held 500 and it was 120 degrees inside the bar. Bar didn’t check IDs so we got in at 17 years old by saying we were 18. Got the underage stamp which we rubbed off in the bathroom so we could buy beer. It was so hot in the bar most of the chicks stripped down to their underwear on the dance floor.

I was driving back to cabin after the bar and the 2 chicks with us decided to get topless and flash their tits at cars through my sunroof on my 08 Z71. Get back to the cabin thinkin I’m bout to lay the pipe and the alcohol kicks in and my girl gets sick so i spend the rest of the night holding her hair while my buddy smashes his chick. To his credit as a true friend he offered to share her but I passed because the thought grossed me out at the time. Looking back, shoulda taken him up on it. Figured I’d still get my girl once she sobered up but didn’t happen. She felt too bad. Overall an awesome night though for a high schooler
