The Dumbest Rule in College Football

In college football, when the offense fumbles the ball and it goes out of bounds in the defensive team's end zone, the result is a touchback and the defense gets the ball. I can't think of a dumber and more unfair rule.
Normally, when the offense fumbles the ball and it rolls out of bounds it goes back to the offense at the spot of the fumble. I don't understand why the rule should be different just because the ball goes out of bounds in the end zone.
I understand that the defense should get the ball if they recover it. But, for the offense to lose the ball, after driving to the other side's goal line, when the defense just watched it roll out of bounds is very unfair and arbitrary.

I think the rule that you are down if your knee touches the ground without someone touching you is worse. Should be the same as the NFL

Well, the thread contains something that is the dumbest, but I’m not sure it’s that rule.

The rule is fine. How about don't fumble in the endzone and it won't be an issue?
It's consistent with the other touchbacks. Loss of possession? Check. Last spot of the ball in the endzone? Check. Touchback

The difference in 1 inch is mind blowing.
-Hit the pylon on the backside defense gets the ball on the 20yd line.
-Hit the pylon on the front, offense keeps the ball on the goal line.

The difference is you can score 7 points by controlling the ball over the line.
It prevents players from being reckless trying to dive in the end zone without control of the ball when they’re near the sideline.
This might be a hot take, but I actually like the rule.

If you fumble a ball out of bounds you retain possession. The defense is only gifted possession when it's out of the end zone
It is in fact an illogical rule

Usually in College sports, the rules are more forgiving than their Pro counterpart..."student athletes" and everything.
CFB is strange...they are forgiving in allowing only one foot down for a completed catch unlike two feet in the NFL...
But if you slip and fall running the ball...play's over.
It's the harshest rule in all of football and they apply it to the College guys.

If you run out of bounds with the ball, you don’t score 6 points. But if you run into the end zone with the ball, you score 6 points. Is that also illogical?
The end zone is different than the rest of the field. That should be quite obvious. So I don’t understand the argument that it should be treated like every other part of the field.
Plus we don’t need to cater to offenses more than we already do. Let defenses have this.
I also think it’s just a fun rule in general.

Yeah. Since the defense gets all the rule change breaks theses days, let’s give another back to the offense
Next hard tackle that could’ve been completed with less force and violence should be flagged for “unnecessary roughness”.

You could easily change this rule and not have any impact on kickoff or punt touchbacks. It wouldn't cause a glitch in the game.

in terms of anywhere else it happens on the field it goes back to the spot of the fumble and stays with the offense then yes i agree with you.
if its a turnover in the endzone then it should also be a turnover at any point it happens on the field so its consistant

But the WORST of all-time in CFB that happened the "excessive celebration" or "taunting" rules in CFB (thanks 1980's Miami) for those dumb-arse rules.
See Jake Locker on YouTube vs. BYU.
See Iowa State receiver high-stepping into the endzone.
One TD was a 15 yard penalty, the other TD was called back or as the rule said "negated."

I'd like to see a reverse touch back.

I think it is a safety thing. Keeps a guy who is down from then getting a defender or two jumping on his, or yanking him down as he tries to get up.
