I'd just add that use the best rum you can afford. Rum Old Fashioneds are my favorite.

Which is basically anything because rum is cheap as frick comparatively.
I drink these all the time as well. I love doing one with plantation pineapple and plantation o.f.t.d mixed 50/50. Had some El Dorado ones the other weekend I really enjoyed as well.

Who is up in here down voting every comment like they are some kind of Rum Old fashioned god that doesn't feel the need to speak up? Of you down vote, then comment too.
I am a fan of making a simple rum old fashioned because the rum is already sweeter than rye or bourbon. I just go with one sugar cube and 3 dashes of angostura or peychauds. Add a luxardo cherry or orange peel for presentation. No muddled fruit. Yuck.

Make them with Diplomatico Reserve all the time.

I’ve got some Seven Fathoms rum - any idea if that would be a decent rum to add?

Did this recipe last night, it was really good!
I think next time I will put the Orgeat in last. It is heavier than the rum so it sinks to the bottom even after you stir it.

If one is adding sugar water, bitters, and possibly fruit then why use expensive rum? Shouldn't better advice be to use the cheapest rum you can stomach?

Not sure why the downvotes

I’m guessing a few people are very strict in their thinking that rum doesn’t belong in an old fashioned.

Nor does vodka belong in a martini. Or chocolate, or watermelon or anything else.

I had one at the Ritz on Canal. My wife thought it was a good idea.
Awful.
Awful.
