So the wife needs a new vehicle and looking at the Mazda CX9, Palisade, and the Atlas.
Like the atlas but I am concerned about reliability, VW have always had a rep of breaking down and being expensive to fix.

The Atlas has only a 13% reliability rating. Compare that to the Subaru at 63% and the Kia at 62%, and you may start hearing warning bells go off! Issues with the VW Atlas are many: brakes, electrical, and engine problems logging the top complaints received by the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration

Take this with a grain of salt because I have no idea her reasons, but it was my friend's dream car for a long time ...and then she got it and hated it and traded it in after like a year.

Wife has had hers for I think about 3 years. She likes it. It had a 6 year 60k mile warranty, so I havent had to pay to fix anything thus far. It is pretty reliable IMO

I purchased a new 2002 VW Passat at the time. 55K later the car would be breaking down constantly and coincidentally at 48K the warranty had expired. I got to fix it but it was one problem after another. Ended up trading it for a 2006 Passat (what was I thinking? idk).
Not sure how VW are made nowadays, after that 2006 Passat I decided not to own a VW ever. Perhaps they are improved. BTW, the Atlas got a steep price tag.

Liked it as a rental, but the owner's nightmares are hard to ignore.
Bought a year used Lexus RX 350 with only 11K on it for thousands under a new Atlas and it is 10 times the ride that Atlas will ever be. Dealer added a 7-year power train on top of the existing warranty. Fingers crossed on the tech tho...

Palisade or Telluride (Kia equivalent for a few dollars cheaper). Best two 3 seat SUV for the money.

Only thing Atlas has going for it is bigger. Drives like crap and unreliable.

Get her a Highlander and be done with it. VW is a POS.

Had an Atlas for over 2 years now. So far it's very reliable and drives great.

Wife has had one for about 3 years. No issues at all and she is very happy with it.

Over the last 2 months I’ve rented both the atlas and the cx9. I enjoyed the cx9 much more. Both times were in Colorado and the atlas had a weird gear ratio on hills. The interior was nicer on the atlas though.

We were looking at them and then we went look at the Jeep Grand Cherokee XL. Liked everything about it more than the VW

Wife had 2, leased the 1st and had to get traded in as a lemon, no issues with the 2nd one.
I really liked it. Rode well and was super spacious.
Local Volkswagen dealer service is horrible. I was surprised that once I go to VW corporate that they actually gave a shite and got us a new vehicle.
Funny thing is that like a day or two after they decided they would give us a new vehicle they fixed the problem on the old vehicle. Ended up being a pinched fuel line. They still gave us the new one which worked out real well when I bought it from VW and sold it for a huge profit at the height of used car prices a year or so ago.
