I don't know about the Shield TV, but I too have a Sony OLED Smart TV, and the Apple 4K TV looks noticeably better than the built-in smart TV functionality.
I have a circa 2016 Roku Ultra on another TV and it has been outstanding.
IMO, the best bang for the buck is a Roku.
