The Rumored Texas Tech Opener - Revisited

I hate the circumstances that had to happen for me to bring this up, but here we are.
Whenever TT, or any decent OOC opponent is mentioned as a possible game, rest assured we will hear one of the following:
"We don't want to risk losing, the SEC slate is tough enough and losing diminishes our NC chances."
"We need cupcakes to work out the kinks and give guys experience."
First off, the odds of going undefeated and/or winning a NC are slim, in ANY year...too many things have to happen. Hell, we haven't gone unbeaten in 50 years with some damned good teams along the way. That said, the goal should be to win the SEC and take your chances with the NC.
Let me pose the question. Would anyone have rather played a team like Texas Tech, who I'm quite certain now would have rung up 50 points on us, exposed our deficiencies and got the coaches working to correct the problems, BEFORE playing a team like UF? Because obviously, whatever kinks there were in the cupcake games weren't enough to get the coaches to recognize them. I'll take an OOC loss against a decent team if it means we're better in conference later. And I've said it 1000 times...it doesn't have to be a top 5 team...although that is fine. Just someone, ANYONE who will provide a test. If you're a true NC contender, you're either going to win or play it close.

I'd like to see the A&M season opener re-established. I know they're bad now, but i'd rather see us pummel the Aggies than App st or UNT. that game had developed into a pretty good rivalry by the time the contract was up.

Your logic is sound. The problem is getting a team to commit to a "one and done" like Oregon State did a few years ago. Texas Tech would have likely demanded a return game, and that would not sit well with LSU and it's apparent "mandatory 8 home games" per season.
Play a schedule with 6 at home and 6 on the road every other year and you'll get some good OOC action. 8 home games a year gets you North Texas, Troy, Appy State and yeah, Tulane*.
*Tulane technically does get a return game, but LSU is guaranteed more fans at a Tulane home game than Tulane will have there!
