How highly did you regard BK as coach at ND?

As a college football fan what were your thoughts, top 5, top 10, top 20 coach? I always thought he was solid, could handle media a little better at times, but gave him benefit of doubt because of recruiting and geographical disadvantages. So top 10??

I didn't think about him one way or another. I knew he was the ND coach, that's all.

I thought he was top 5, but not capable of reaching the top. I never thought about what he could do at another school, I thought he would retire at ND.

I'll admit that when news first broke that LSU hired Kelly, I was upset.
I always knew he was up there with the top tier but my bias against Notre Dame definitely clouded my perspective on him.

Top 10 coach
Hard to argue with the success he had at Cincy and he brought ND back up to relevance after Weiss.

I thought he was a too 15-20 coach. Notre dame always played an extremely easy schedule and got beat pretty badly anytime they got into the playoffs. They didn’t have the ability to get the same recruits a school like LSU can do it’s hard to know how he would have done with better recruits.
That being said, he is a massive upgrade from Orgeron. Lsu doesn’t need the best coach in football to win. He’s very professional but I do like that he’s opening up a little at LSU and showing more personality. It seems like this change is really good for him. I’m cautiously optimistic about the future.

I thought he was shite at first but got better as the years went on. I still don't think he's a top 5 coach but we dont need a top 5 coach to win nattys anyway

I thought he was Notre Dame brand Les Miles.
I still think he is but if Les can win here so can he. Especially if Saban leaves in the next 3ish years. Then the SEC becomes wide open again.

Top 5

Top 15 coach who has potential to do great things. I don’t think he has the grit to win it all - especially at what we’re paying him.
This board is expecting way too much from BK and in a year or two, we’re going to be calling for his head. Bookmark this post if you must but he’s not the answer.

Top 5 coach in his prime. The kind of coach no college program should be able to pull away but Woodward did.

Thought he was a bit of a prick but a good coach. He’s our prick now

Not very highly if I’m being completely honest. I thought in big games he coached cowardly and conservative

i thought he ran a really good program and they seemed tough on the offensive and defensive lines. I knew he couldn't stack up talent wise with bamas of the world but was in the playoffs quite a bit.

Rarely noticed. Maybe 7-10.

Thought he was a top 10 coach at worst. People hate notre dame and judge him unfairly because of it. Having notre dame in the playoffs is not something many other coaches could do

Notre Dame fans are glad he's gone because he was never going to get ND over the hump. He's a disengaged, mediocre recruiter and that just doesn't work at ND. I believe it was Urban Meyer who said that ND's biggest recruiting advantage is its national reach and the fact that pretty much every recruit in the country will take your call. ND's biggest disadvantage in recruiting is that they have a relatively small natural recruiting base, so they enter almost every recruiting battle in 3rd place. It takes a lot of effort and relationship building to convince a recruit to move across the country to ND. Kelly just didn't put in the effort to do that, and when he did, I don't think recruits really warmed up to him.
ND fans are excited because on the recruiting front, Marcus Freeman is everything Kelly wasn't and is exactly what ND needs. It obviously won't matter one iota, however, if Freeman can't maintain the program and culture that Kelly built.
Kelly has other shortcomings as a coach too that hindered him at ND. Contrary to popular belief, he is absolutely not a QB whisperer, and in fact, his development and management of that position was piss poor. This dogged ND on the recruiting trail trying to get elite QBs and WRs. ND fans are very split on whether keeping Rees on as OC was a good move or not.

One step above Orgeron.

I thought he was Chip's brother.

Very. I thought he was a huge a-hole that had obviously mellowed the last 5-6 years or so. But I always thought of him as a top 5-7 CFB coach.
