re: Miles apparently just assured the team he is coming back.

You can argue it, but does it merit a $15 to $18.75 million buyout?
I simply think until he wins 11 wins 2 times from when he got the new contract (2007) or wins the West, he shouldn't be given a bigger salary or buyout.

Les is not a top 5 coach and almost no one sees him as one outside of some delusional LSU fans. Top 20? yes. Top 10? Questionable.
Top 10 - absolutely. Top 5 - it can be argued.
Many of the guys everyone puts in the top 10 are people like RR from a couple of years ago. Once they get to a large program in a power conference, they can't win at the same rate anymore. Guys like Petersen at Boise are wildcards imo. I think that was proven with his predecessor at Colorado (Dan Hawkins).
Who would you put in the top 10? I'd put Miles below guys like Saban and Stoops but above guys like Tressel.

Clearly whether Miles leaves or not all comes down to one thing: Is the grass greener on the other side? A man's gotta eat.

ALso, it's laughable to me to discuss a buyout of Miles. If, and that's a big if, Miles was fired, who do you think LSU would be able to hire....especially after firing won of the winningest coaches in the conference.

If I had to say top 10 coaches:
Saban
Chip Kelly
Mack Brown (one bad year in 13)
Stoops
Pinkel
Bielema
Fitzgerald
Patterson
Petrino
Whittingham

FREAKING LOL @ LSUwannabemafia still not knowing how contracts or salaries work. I would love to know what you do for a living.

I know exactly how contracts work genius. I am not the type of person to continually give you an extension if your work doesn't continue to be top quality.
Sadly, I am sure you think that TAF should run its contracts like civil service contracts.

Why does his buyout matter? He hasn't done anything to deserve being fired.
He has the best winning percentage of any LSU coach ever. According to his accomplishments he has basically earned the right to retire at LSU. His results dictate a top salary also.
You have been bitching about the division finishes. He has only finished 3rd or worse once and it was kind of understandable.
Saban just finished 4th this year at Bama and he is the highest paid coach in the country.

They are not backtracking it. They fulfilled their obligation to it through 2014. He signed it.
Now, if it's true he hasn't been rolled over in 2 years and he's only got 2 years on his contract left, we are talking about a different story.
My opinion is simple. Four year contract with current salary with 50% of total contract guaranteed, but say 10 wins = automatic extension no matter what.
I think that is more than fair given his history.

Don't take this the wrong way...I think you're misinformed in this case about Les' contract, LSU's desire, an the State Laws that governs both of those. TAFs contract is intertwined with the LSU contract.

He's finished 3rd at least twice. This year they were 3rd, no if's and's or but's about it. Arkansas was 2nd.
He had a losing record in the SEC. LSU's only one in 11 years.
That said, I never said he should lose his salary, simply how much of it is guaranteed.
To the guy laughing about those coaches, they've done a hell of a lot more with less than Les has done.
Do NC's make you automatically better than those coaches? They didn't walk into the talent LSU had/has. Period.

Cajun, I understand that the contract is intertwined between LSU/state(small portion) and TAF (majority).
I was not aware that all state contracts in Louisiana were guaranteed. I was under the impression, his salary from the state had to be guaranteed completely, but not the TAF portion since it's somewhat a hybrid contract.

Ok, let's compare....
Above Miles:
Saban - agree
Kelly - only 2 years, but agree
Brown - agree, but playing in the Big 12 has helped
Stoops - agree
Below Miles:
Patterson - agree, but it'd be interesting how his teams would do against tough competition every week
Pinkel - has 2 or fewer conference losses 2/10 years and 7/10 at or below .500

Bielema - 49–16 record (1st season was 12-1 so he had talent. Miles was 62–17 and played against much more difficult compeition. Should I mention 4 (maybe 5) NCs from the SEC out of 6 years that Miles has been at LSU?
Fitzgerald - 34–29, 18–22 conference at NW. Not bad, but I'm not putting him above Miles.
Petrino - great offensive mind, but not above Miles imo
Whittingham - has won the MWC 1 out of 7 years after taking over the program from Meyer who left it in great shape.

We played A&M and Arky played tOSU. tOSU is a way better team than the Aggies. Be realistic.

With that contract, you wouldn't sign any of the coaches on your "list".

GeauxTigersLee,
I look at those coaches and to me if you put them at LSU, I think they'd do better than Les. They've done how they've done with limitations at their schools.
Put Patterson with LSU's talent, same with Wittingham, Fitzgerald, Pinkel, etc. Give them LSU just after Saban left and you think they do worse than Les?
