Let's bring Freeman to where he should have been all along.

Though Jones has done a great job with the defense once Ed got out of the way.

Are most schools going with the OC/PGC set up now? Does Rees use a PGC?

I think we’re gonna have to wait on Freeman. He’s probably gonna get an interview for the ND HC job 1st. 2nd, if Fickell gets the ND job, Freeman will probably get an interview for their HC vacancy as well.

And even if he doesn’t get either job, he was Fickell’s DC at Cincinnati, so unless he just feels ND does him wrong someway in the process, he’ll likely just stay at ND with a little raise. I’d imagine Luke is probably a less demanding boss than Brian, so if it was true that his wife didn’t like Baton Rouge or just wanted to stay in the Midwest, then nothing there has changed, so not sure why he’d pick up and move now. UNLESS, that was just an excuse, and the real reason was he either didn’t think he could learn much from Orgeron or just got the feeling he wasn’t gonna be around too long and didn’t want to hitch his wagon to him.

Regardless, Kelly’s coordinator hires are gonna be absolutely huge. And now that we’ve got the HC in place for recruiting, getting the RIGHT coordinators is much more important than getting them fast. If it takes 2 weeks to see how the Freeman thing plays out, then it takes 2 weeks. You’ve just got to ride that out.

I wish there was a way to keep Daronte on staff but I just don't see Kelly keeping him as DC.

No idea, but since Kelly is an offensive coach who works with QBs, I doubt they have a PGC. However, Golic Jr. was on Off the Bench this morning, and T-Bob and Hester asked him what kind of coach he was. He said that later in his career, he’s become more of a CEO and empowers his assistants to do their thing. He will work with the QBs, but isn’t as hands on as he maybe once was.

I know that may not be what a lot of us want to hear, but it didn’t come off like it reads. Said he was a terrific program guy, who has a clear vision and will come in with a very clear plan on how to achieve it. Said only one coach remains from when Golic played for him 10 years ago, so he is great at identifying and hiring assistants and maintaining their identity.

As for Rees, he said he’s about as Notre Dame as you can get. He went there, obviously, and I think his dad works for ND. Said he may even get an interview for HC. So it may be hard to pull him. But—and this is just my opinion—a young, ambitious guy in his early 30s can’t honestly think he can stay at his alma mater forever. He’s gonna have to leave at some point to grow. I’m not even sure Kelly wants to bring him to Baton Rouge, but if he does and is willing to throw the money at him (I doubt he makes that much now, relatively), I think he’d come.

BUT, Notre Dame’s bowl/CFP status is gonna play a factor in a lot of these. Kelly had to leave now if he was gonna take the job, but somebody’s gonna have to coach those kids, and it would be insane to me for a team—Notre fricking Dame no less—to enter the playoffs with a lame duck staff. Selfishly, for LSU, I hope Notre Dame doesn’t make the playoffs. But I kinda don’t want it for those kids either. Be a lot easier to swallow your HC bailing on you before NY6 bowl rather than the playoffs.
