I don't have a full assessment, aside from my observation that the best DC's are former LB or DB experts. They come from a player and/or coaching perspective, seeing more of the cerebral, big picture flow of pass coverage, which is essential in circa-now CFB.

Dline coaches are super important, but they are much less concerned with the big picture flow, and more about strength and technique.

Does Nielson also possess this essential experience?

Otherwise, I have the same concern i had for Pelini last year.

No, I'm not making a direct compare, just a general statement that CFB DEMANDS Keen and current knowledge and skills and experience coaching defenses from a big picture pass defense perspective of success.

OK...you get my point.

Please educate me on what Nielson has in this vital area.

Cause most folks seem to think Coach O is hiring him.

Yes there are. He is a positional coach that gives zero indication that he would transition successfully to DC. To pretend that he would be a slam dunk hire is pretty ducking stupid and parroted too often on the forum. He might be an awesome DC if hired, but no one knows and no one has a clue to think otherwise.

It would be a blind hire in my opinion. Don't know if he would be a good play caller. Will he blitz alot? Will he play mostly man or zone? Will he be a 4-3 or 3-4 guy. There's literally no info on Nielson other than he can develop DL

Argument for: well respected. Thought to have a shot at some nfl dc spots. Was known as a good recruiter. Does a good job coaching his guys. Said to be someone who can connect with players. Has been a dc once
Cons. Only a dc once a while ago at a smaller school.

I like the guy. Sure it is a risk. But you have to do your due diligence on him in talking. In the nfl all the main assts are involved in game planning. While maybe a college dline coach is more involved with recruiting the nfl assts don’t have to do this. This extra time is spent I meetings with your fellow assts and working on all aspects and how they can mesh.

Everything I’ve seen or heard about him points to him having a seriously good eye for talent and does a great job getting the most out of his guys. I’m for it.

As far as having less time with the DL because of DC duties & recruiting, I think we are still in good shape there with Lacouture more than likely taking on more responsibility.

In other words: you are just too damn lazy to research Neilson’s coaching history.

Huh?

quote:

From 2013-2016, he was the defensive line/recruiting coordinator/run game coordinator at North Carolina State. The 2016 season saw the Wolfpack rank eighth in the FBS in rush defense and lead the ACC, allowing just 108.6 rushing yards per game — the school's best mark since 2004. Junior defensive end Bradley Chubb recorded 22 tackles for loss, fourth in the country, while his 11 sacks were fourth in the ACC and 19th in the nation. He was named second-team All-ACC. A Broyles Award candidate in 2015/2016, given annually to college football's top assistant coach, Nielsen earned this recognition tutoring a Wolfpack defensive line that was part of a defense that ranked 29th in the FBS in opponent net yards per game. Defensive end Mike Rose was a second-team All-ACC selection after he finished second in the ACC in sacks and ninth in tackles for loss. In the 2018 NFL Draft, four linemen who Nielsen coached in Raleigh; Chubb, B.J. Hill, Justin Jones and Kentavius Street, were all selected.

Nielsen coached at Northern Illinois from 2011-12, including a 2012 season where he was the co-defensive coordinator/defensive line/recruiting coordinator and helped the Huskies to the 2012 GoDaddy.com Bowl. Two defensive lineman were first-team All-MAC selections in 2012, Sean Progar and Alan Baxter, while Nabal Jefferson was a National Scholar-Athlete and finalist for the 2012 William V. Campbell Trophy. In 2011, Nielsen coached Progar and Ron Newcomb to All-Mid American Conference honors.

Serving as the defensive line/special teams coach at Tennessee-Martin in 2010, the Skyhawks led the Ohio Valley Conference in total defense. From 2008-09, Nielsen was the defensive coordinator and coached the defensive line and linebackers at Central Connecticut State. In 2009, Central Connecticut won the Northeastern Conference title. Nielsen served as the defensive line coach at the University of Mississippi from 2005-07 under current LSU Head Coach and former Saints assistant Ed Orgeron, following one season at the University of Idaho, where he coached two freshman All-Americans. Rebels defensive linemen led the Southeastern Conference in sacks twice during his three-year stint. Nielsen got his start in coaching as a volunteer assistant at his alma mater, the University of Southern California in 2002.

Saints Bio

Maybe he doesn't have extensive coordinator experience but based on his history he knows how to scheme.

Arguments for young up and comer have you seen the Saints defense of line this year has already been a DC coordinator at one point in his career pro experience will help recruiting defense of lineman arguments against it’s gonna be hard to keep him in a couple years.

Does everyone not know he has been a college DC?

Seems very rare to have a candidate with no risks or drawbacks. These are very few and far between on the DC side, people like Venables and Leonhard, who aren't going anywhere anyway.

While I'd be excited and optimistic if Nielsen came, the thing that jumps out to me as a possible risk/question mark is being a front 7 guy in this era of passing offenses. I would wonder if he would be up to the task of scheming in the passing game against a Sarkisian, now O'Brien, with Bama's absurd offensive talent. Similar question for going against Lincoln Riley in the CFP or even Kiffin if he's able to build his talent up.

Pure speculation on my part, but I would think he has learned a lot under Dennis Allen at the Saints. I say that because I am sure the DL is a huge part of Allen's weekly game plan. Also he has already, granted not as a sole DC, gone up against guys like BOB when then saints played the Texans. Lastly, he has to practice against guys like Brees, Kamara, and Thomas.

I think the upside outweighs the unknowns considering the pool of potential candidates left to pick from but that's just my opinion.

This is leap-of-faith 2.0. Like Pelini, you have to lean on baseless projections.

Sure, it could work. But, it's an outright leap-of-faith hire. Fittingly, he's a "Saint", so maybe that's supporters basis for their assessment.

After the Pelini travesty, and Coach O being inexperienced in the overall defensive scheme area, its a very unnessary risk.

If he's hired, I'll support him cause I love the Tigers, but prior to hiring him, the case is FAR from made by the responses in this post.
