re: Wheel of Time TV Series, (Casting news continues, production should be restarting soon)
You are starting what Is called “the slog”.

Books 8-10 are a chore at times, with book 10 is by far the worst book in the series. It is really excruciatingly boring and worthless.

11 is a return to form before he passed. The last 3 by Sanderson are good (although he doesn’t quite get the feel for certain characters, especially Mat)

Books 2-6 are all pretty close for me, with Fires of heaven probably being my favorite.

Books 9 and 10 are straight garbage (outside of the last 75-100 pages of Winters Heart, which is great). Once you get past those the rest are at least solid, with knife of dreams and gathering storm being quite good.

ETA: Some relatively light spoilers below about the overall series. Just realized someone was on their first read through.

I'm about the same, I enjoyed great hunt a lot more this go around so I think I can put it in my run if books 2-6 as being my favorite stretch in any fantasy I've read - I used to say it was books 3 - 7, but 7 isnt quite to the same level as the others.

My favorite scene in the series is the going through the columns in rhuidean or however it's spelled. So that book is probably my favorite. Essentially its rand fully ascending to his status as the chosen one and before couladin fricks everything up.

I'm just starting knife of dreams now and I anticipate it to he pretty awesome given that crossroads of twilight is literally 800 pages of set up, rehashing how characters are feeling, kind of random stuff that happens but doesnt shape the story in any way. I remember enjoying it quite a lot last time I read it anyway.

I feel like winters heart could have been overall solid if they had actually paid off those storylines in the next book and not just sort of continued rehashing entirely.

I've only read the last 3 books one time each so I'll be able to give a better comment about those after I finish this reread. But for me the joy is almost always in the introduction to the world and the characters, so Sanderson did a great job wrapping up a massive series, but it won't be in my top if the series.

I did very much enjoy the final resolution of rand's internal conflict where he sees Tam again and then eventually reaches internal peace and truly become lord of the morning. The details of how exactly all that played out are hazy, definitely looking forward to that portion of the story.

Doing my first read and had to take a break about half way through crown of swords before finishing. Just starting path of daggers now. Just curious if y’all ranked the books how would you rank them? So far I think great hunt was my favorite and the back end of crown got me back into it (during holidays didn’t have time to read with work). I’m committed to finishing no matter what but I’ve heard some of the back end ones aren’t quite up to par.

Book 8 is generally solid, but definitely not up to the whirlwind pacing of the early part of the story. I think you'll get through winters heart ok - it has a lot of set up and all but has some good stuff towards the end.

When you get to crossroads of twilight, allow yourself to scan over some paragraphs and skip the rehashing, etc. to get through it understanding you wont miss much that you dont already know or wont see again. You could even read a summary or somethung before or after you read it.

Or just power through and know that it gets better and the series has a solid conclusion. It's a lot easier now that the whole thing is finished. Waiting a couple years for a book and then reading to find out it barely has forward momentum and the having to wait a few years for the next installment was brutal.

He really suffered from having several sort of slow burn plot lines where people were getting bogged down all hit at this stretch. Those plot lines are necessary in some ways because a story where they just rip across the continent starts to sort of undermine the realism of his world. But that coupled with Jordan's insistence to essentially show every part of the whole journey in extreme detail result in a tough stretch of books.

Also sorry for the long rambling posts, but hopefully it's somewhat helpful. I dont get to talk about this series with too many people so gotta jump at the opportunity. I've probably read books 1-6 or 7 like 5+ times each, probably getting close to double digits

Great Hunt and Shadow Rising are my two favorites so far. I'm currently in Fires of Heaven at the moment.

Doing your first read as well? I’m glad I got into this series. Was worried when I tried Malzahan book of the fallen 10ish years ago. Got a couple books in and just couldn’t stick with it. Don’t remember why but it lost me and I never connected. Biggest problem with this series now is there are so many characters. Takes a while to remember who is who at times and have to be careful looking up reminders due to spoilers. Already had a major spoiler revealed when I was reading a book summary and a normally covered spoiler section was open on the website.

I don't want to go off of this tangent, but I am a very old school WOT fan, started reading it in the 90s, and I could never get into Malzahan either. I just did not get it at all and found it to be a chore and not enjoyable.

Anyway...

For what this thread is about:

Some minor news, and this may go into minor show spoiler territory:

They hired a director named Ciaran Donnelly to direct the last two episodes of the season. He's done Vikings, Altered Carbon, etc. Has a pretty strong recent streaming/TV resume.

There are some set shots that appear to show either a Waygate or Portal Stone. It is a very interesting look, leading a lot of people to think they may be combining the two.

Still no announced casting of Elayne or Min, which may mean neither appears in Season 1.

It is becoming increasingly clear that they are changing some of the structure and speeding things up to combine at least a large portion of Great Hunt into Season 1.

Emond's Fieldis is supposed to have thatch roofs.

Except for the Winespring Inn and it's fancy arse tile.

Yes, it is supposed to, but thatch would be extremely time consuming to do, and they are likely re-using parts of this set for other towns (as seen in leaks).

Not a big deal to have Cenn Buie be a tiler instead of a thatcher in this turning of the wheel.

Great Hunt has Lanfear if I remember correctly.

What smokeshow has been cast for her?

I was kind of thinking that it could be possible to take out Lanfear of this season. If you think about it - She is only majorly involved in one small aspect of the Great Hunt, more just to set up her possessiveness for Rand and to tempt him to shirk his duties relative to the horn.

That could potentially just be pushed down the line to be fully developed in season 2 - but in any case she would probably only be in 1 episode, 2 max, for the show in season 1 unless I'm forgetting some other times she sticks around.

Yeah, I'm run into some of the same issues with WOT. It's my first read and I wanted to get some reminders of who is from where and where each of these cities are. I've had some things spoiled for me, but not everything.

I usually just power through and keep reading, because you will likely figure it out after a few context clues. Plus if you don't remember, its probably just a minor character and all so it isn't usually imperative as long as you can place them generally into what plotline they are in - random noble from tier or carhien, one of the nobles people with perrin, a wise one with rand, ashaman, etc.

No casting news for Lanfear. Its possible she isn't included yet.

So does it look like Min is currently not being included in Season 1?

I'm very open to variations in the story but Min is one of the better female characters so I really don't like that if it holds true. Plus she is the one that helps keeps Rand in the world of the living mentally, etc. and her and Cadsuane's dynamic with rand towards the end of the series is vital.

I have read that the show's writers think that Rand's 3 women "just will not work on screen", what ever that means. It is a shame, because each of them embody a crucial phase of Rand's required development from sheep herder to World Savior.

Started to write a summary of why each of them is crucially important to Rand's growth, and in checking the spelling of his warrior Queen, I came across this link which far better explained the importance of each
