I’m legitimately considering taking off Dec 7 and plowing through half of Wind and Truth on release

I love Kate Reading's narration (and Michael Kramer's). Didnt realize more people dislike Kate

Without spoilers obviously, but is she generally viewed as one of the weaker/least interesting characters?

of the 3 mains, she probably gets the most shite from fans. I understand why people don't like her but I don't mind Shallan. I like her at times.

I like her so far.

She gave me my first legit lol moment in her last chapter when she was talking to the priest (not called a priest but I forget his name) that she thought was flirting with her.

Priest: Bastard! O sorry, forgive me. *priest looks towards the sky* Forgive me.
Shallan: I'm sure the ceiling forgives you.

Arya was always my favorite character in GoT and she just kind of reminds me of Arya just a little with her attitude.

That is why a lot of people don't like her, she is constantly being quippy. I don't mind it.

Its clear in the first book that Sanderson wasn't quite sure what to do with her at times and she seems very outside the main narrative, but I don't think its spoilery to say that she becomes much more connected and one of the main characters in the early parts of Stormlight Archive.

I think another thing is that a character like Dalinar is SO strong that it gets people annoyed when it shifts to one of her chapters

Alright so this is the first fantasy that I've read that it's making me feel a little dumb.

I'm having a little difficult time wrapping my head around the powers of the stormlight and souldcasters. I'm not supposed to fully understand how all this works yet right?

Curious if I go to the coppermind and look up stormlight, soulcasters, etc. if those will have spoilers in them.

Same here, I quite enjoy a good quipping.

one of the main characters

Just one?

I appreciate a good back-and-forth between characters, a good quip or two can help cement in the mind of the reader how intellectually nimble the character is.

quote:

“The last thing I’d want to do is accidentally insult you, Vathah,” Shallan said. “To think that I couldn’t manage it on purpose if I wanted!”

She's like a scalpel slice compared to Wit's blunt force trauma, but I enjoy both.

Depending on how far in you are, correct.

It gets explained in pieces, but like a jigsaw puzzle with random pieces getting tossed at you from time to time. Eventually you have enough pieces, but you still have to go through some work to put enough of them together to get the bigger picture(s).

You definitely are not supposed to fully understand them for quite awhile.

Its in some ways like mystery novels piecing it together, and that will go on for basically the entirety of the series.

Most definitely so

Ars Arcanum in the back of the book usually does a good job describing things without spoiling much. I think mistborn AA has a couple spoilerish things but I don't think SLA has that. Just stick to the topic you're wondering about.

Just a random question but like I've mentioned, I'm trying to avoid spoilers with Googling. Are all Spren in the shape of humans? Or is that just Shin? They've mentioned numerous different types of Spren but I wasn't sure if they all looked like people or is that just a form that Shin took.

Not really an important question, just something I was wondering.

Edit: Also just a reading update. I'm 3/4 of the way done with TWOK and man did I want Kal to pick up that shard blade. He should have known some light eye was going to claim it The story of why Kal was in prison/slave ended up being a nice backstory. You knew he killed someone, but didn't know who. I liked that a lot. He's by far my favorite character right now.

Shin are humans, they don't take on any forms or whatever you're trying to say, so I'm really not sure what you are asking here. They are a race of people from Shinovar, a country all the way to the far west of the continent

As to spren...that is somewhat spoilery. There are different types of spren and they can do different types of things including taking different kinds of shapes.

Whoops, getting my words mixed up. Mean Syl, not Shin.

I’m glad you are enjoying The Way of Kings. Stormlight is an amazing adventure. I really hope nothing is spoiled for you. I’m on my third re-read. My first time through I had no spoilers and no help from the wiki. Just went through amazed by the universe crafted. Second time I delved more into the wiki. This time I think I know more about some areas of Roshar than I do Earth

Be warned: The closer we get to December the more spoilers will inevitably be in this thread. By Dec 10 I assume you won’t be able to click on this thread without finishing Wind and Truth.

**************

MAJOR SPOILER BELOW:

Currently rereading Oathbringer. The side character backstories are very well done. If I could choose to kill any one fictional character myself it would be Moash. Tefts entire story and backstory and ending is so brutal. frick Moash.

Also, being quippy has nothing to do with why I don’t like Shallan. She’s a stupid immature annoying child. Her multiple personalities and stupid “Veil missions” are exhausting to get through.she has her moments but for the most part she an annoying ridiculously short sited often stupid woman.

I highly enjoy some of the Shallan chapters in Words of Radiance and Oathbringer. But I get tired of the split personality stuff.
