A few things, Rafe has already said that he thinks Rand's 3 won't work as is on screen and reimagines it more as a Polyamory thing.

Second, I've seen quite a few people comment that guest stars and recurring roles are generally not released until much later in a production, and while Thom, Elayne, Min are much bigger characters in the books, none of those characters would appear in the first season in more than 3-4 episodes, most likely.

So that could be why we haven't heard anything.

Well that sounds like he definitely is keeping Min, and he is right. The whole sister-wives stuff isn't really necessary and you can sort of gloss over most of that, like I doubt the whole Bain Chiad and all is necessary when trimming the whole story down to a manageable size.

I'm assuming they're starting this show with a "see how it goes" attitude and haven't really put much thought in the ending yet?

I recently finished a re-read, and the only way they'll do the Last Battle justice is with Endgame's budget and it will have to be at least 4 1-hour episodes long.

While I'm sure they have a rough gameplan...they will be exceedingly lucky to get the 7-8 seasons necessary to do it in the streaming age, and I'm sure they know that.

I am listening to eye of the world right now. Do the characters get less petulant?

As one of the few people on these boards as well read in fantasy as me, I'm kinda shocked you haven't read WOT. But to answer your question, Mat gets 100 times better and becomes the best character in the series, but most of the females get worse if anything, but they have positives that outweigh the negatives overall.

I'm not too worried about the size or characters not fitting their description in that way, I'd alwasy envisioned Lan as some hulking monster, but I'm not sure if he was written that way or not. Perrin is one of my least favorite of the main characters so that may play a role, he may look weird swinging giant hammers and axes.

I get them trying to diversify the main cast in today's climate. I know the story has diversified cultures as a whole, but if you only see the main group for the most part in season 1, it could get panned for being just white people, etc. and not generate the following it needs to move forward.

I find diversity just for the sake of it mildly annoying, but it doesn't really bother me as long as they stay true to the characters.

Lan is written as being a burly guy, he'd be a hard person to cast as written. As long as he's a badass still it doesn't really matter.

But Perrin being a huge burly blacksmith is a major part of who he is as a character. He's so big and strong his personality is built around him having to worry about hurting other people, which is why the feral/wolf blood part fits so well with who he is. And why he needs the strong falcon to balance him. A skinny Perrin completely changes the character.

Min being left out would be ridiculous though, she's a much needed normal person viewpoint that balances out Rand and by far the most likeable of the love interests.

My brother read through book 8 or 9 and gave up. He told me it was absolute work getting through them because they plod along. He's a massive fantasy nerd. Got me into AD&D, Werewolf Apocalypse, Vampire the Masquerade, and so on. So I've always been a bit daunted by them because if he couldn't get through them, how the hell does anybody? But with audio books, I don't mind much. I don't have shite else to do for those long commutes. May as well listen to how scrumptious a pie is.

Book 8 is extremely mediocre, and books 9 and 10 suck balls for sure. Rest of the series is solid though (first book is the worst behind those). Don't think you'll regret audio booking them up, despite the small annoying quirks here or there, like braid pulling that never ends.

I agree but in today's climate it's probably just the way it ha to be now. Ideas and practice regarding diversity and inclusion on tv has changed significantly since GoT started.

Perrins sort of quiet, brooding, methodical nature definitely works better with his description in the books. If they felt like they needed to diversify the EF characters, they should have picked Mat out of the main 3, he is the only I didnt have a real image in my head for even after reading the first half of the series several times.

WOTonPrime posted a clip from the first table read which was awesome.

Some eagle eyed people spotted none other than Roose Bolton himself, no role announced for him yet but lots of speculation.

potential Tam? Also would it be all people in the first season / book one there? Cause that is exactly how Aginor or whoever it was at the en of Book 1 looked in my head.

It looked like it was just for Episode 1...

But speculation on him running wild. Tam, Thom, Baalzamon, Padan Fain.

I kind of feel like a bad guy is too obvious.

He doesn't fit the look of Thom really at all but the more I think of it, it would sort of be a really interesting choice. Huge, deep voice, resonant, has real gravitas. Tam makes sense as well but has such a small role Season 1.

So 3 more minor castings have come out. Mat’s parents, and....the third one is a DRASTIC departure from the books. I can go into spoiler territory if anyone wants. But if true, really a pretty large change that I kind of like for TV.

It’s a women playing “Laila Aybara”.

SPOILERISH STUFF BELOW:

Are you just thinking they give more facetime so we get attached before trollocs - or that they are just going to merge the Luhhan's and Aybara's into one?
