Yes, Matrim Cauthon, he is generally considered the best and most well liked character in the series and he doesn't even get a POV chapter until Book 3. When you are closer to finishing the series you will almost forget that it took so long for him to be "introduced".

RJ has said in interviews that it was one of his bigger mistakes early in the series not getting to him sooner and not finding his voice until Book 3.

I have read the whole series 3 times, and it gets better each time. On my most recent reread, I kept waiting to get to the parts that I had previously found so difficult, and was surprised to find I had passed through them without the same degree of drudgery. Still, the kidnapping and the crown–grabbing story lines do bog down. The former is routinely referred to online as the PLOD, plot line of death or doom

The first time through, especially having to wait for each of the last 4 books, I had a very difficult time keeping track of the thousands of characters or even the 100s of important ones. I found the communities online dedicated to the book, including a comprehensive list of characters, each beginning with a physical description followed by chronologic brief synopses of each of their appearances in the story. Whoever did this did not continue it through the last couple or 3 books, but is otherwise complete. I am glad I did not find it while on my first read, because it was too easy to accidentally read too far in the chronology and reach spoilers. Some of the initial descriptions also tell you outright if some of the characters are dark friends, which can be a spoiler indeed.

Another great companion, especially your second time through, is the re–read and the re–re–read at tor.com by Lori Butler. The first was started before the final few books were published and included many spoilers up to that point, along with much speculation since most of the plot lines remained unresolved. It was an exciting time for readers.

Even the slower books have at least 1 plot–forwarding story line with a grand finish that made the book.

I mean 10 is considered universally by far the worst book in the series.

I was just recently told that these were being made into a series - is this going to be well produced with a decent budget? I'd love to see it near with GoT, but nowhere near the D&D quality. Any idea of the premiere?

It APPEARS that Amazon is throwing budget at it but no one really knows. We don't know the amount of episodes or budget.

We do know that some smart people are involved, and that after just 2 months of filming Amazon has enough faith in it that they greenlit the whole writing team to start work on Season 2.

Rafe Judkins is a big fan and has solid credits, he is the showrunner.

Getting Rosamund Pike, a fairly in demand actress, to play Moiraine is a good get and shows the level of commitment to the production. She is also an Exec Producer.

We will see, but it looks like Amazon is giving this the chance to succeed.
