Larry was heralded as a stellar recruiter when we brought him on the staff. Does anyone have any insight as to how hes doing on the recruiting trail?

Asa Martin...

If Kerryon Johnson and Kam Pettway go pro, though, the backfield is in trouble in 2018. Limited playing time, no true “carry the load” back and the potential rotation could make the staff look clueless.

To be fair, not many if us viewed KJ as a “carry the load back” prior to this season, and even this season when Pettway went down.

Pettway has a similar story, too, really. Only 12 receiving yards in 2015 to his name before exploding for 1200 yards in 9 games the following year.

I guess my point is that in our offense, a bell cow will emerge due to how our RBs are used. And we’ve gone big, small, and tall to make it work

Which I still don't understand given KJ's size + running style. I swear, before the season people were thinking KJ was Kam Martin sized at 5'10 180lb

True, but I think that was mainly from injury history, right?

hell, the backfield was in trouble all year long. Its blows my fn mind that Auburn cant recruit 5* running backs on an annul basis.

Mike Dyer
Jovon Robinson
Roc Thomas

Auburn’s best running backs have been lower rated guys. Tre Mason 3*, Peyton Barber 3*, Kam Pettway 3*, Kerryon Johnson 4*, Ben Tate 4*, etc.

Auburn seems to have bad luck with the 5* running backs.

Yeah, its really a turnoff to all of these 5* RBs that Auburn consistently produces thousand yard rushers year after year.

Both, really. KJ and Pettway both limited prior to their breakout seasons because of injury.

I think that’s going to be Malik Miller’s story too. Medical redshirt leading to an eventual phenomenal year.

Barrett was a top 10 back his year. Asa Martin is a top 10 guy this year. We may have walk-on kickers lining up on offense but it’s not at RB

I understand the lust for these 5* guys but we’ve had greater success under Malzahn with the guys he recruited that weren’t 5* guys (Dyer, Robinson, Thomas)

I wouldn't necessarily include Dyer in that list because he had a hell of a career despite only playing 2 years here but I do agree with your point. We don't have to worry about RB under Malzahn

Yeah, I’m really just pointing out that the 5* guys that we’ve had haven’t all worked out. And of course, Dyer is a mixed bag. He is forever an Auburn legend due to his NCG last minute run, but we really missed him in 2012

He was a stud in 2011. That team was terrible.

Kid plays at a Stephenson. Very good program that produces guys every year.

I don't see why everyone thinks you have to be 215 pounds to carry the ball 20+ times. Asa, Barrett and/or Kam could easily bulk up to 195 or 200 pounds and carry the ball a lot next year. Weight isn't important. Hell, even Shaun Shivers could probably carry the ball 12-15 times if needed. He's only about 170 but the dude is absolutely yoked. I'd guess he ends up about 185 pounds and that is huge for a 5'6 dude.

Tre Mason was also one of my favorite recruits we signed in the Gus era (as an OC). He was a borderline top 250 guy, IIRC. Given, I had him pegged as more of a Dexter McCluster do-it-all type, but he packed on a ton of muscle.
