Ole Miss Students Have Voted 'Yes' To Changing Mascot To Landshark
Beth Hall-USA TODAY Sports
This past Friday Ole Miss' Associated Student Body announced that 81-percent of the 4,100 students voted to change their mascot from the current black bear to the Landshark. Per The Daily Mississippian...
quote:

“We hope this will be a catalyst for a transition toward a new mascot, the Landshark,” the announcement read. “We believe that affection for the Landshark serves as a symbolic rallying point, something lovingly embraced among students from a variety of backgrounds- races, religions, creeds, or political affiliations. To that end, it is clear that the student body believes the Landshark deserves to represent our school’s spirit on the field, in the Grove, and in our hearts.”
Should this happen?

Too close with "landed sharks", Jim McElwain is already undressing.

Just when I think things can't get any worse for LSU as a program, I read stuff like this and I'm always reminded "Thank God for Mississippi". We could always be worse off, even after a loss to Troy. At least we don't want to change our mascot to the freaking landsharks. Lolol.

Considering the local species is the LOUISIANA black bear, it makes sense to change. But a catfish would be better. It honors the Mississippi River and the fact that Ole Miss is a bottom feeder.

Slackaveli00 lololol @ ole miss admin; they dont even have enough balls to keep their ole colonel mascot. But KFC can come on tv in a foghorn leghorn accident screaming "Finger lickin', finger lickin', finger lickin'" all throughout the football games during commercials. Unbelievable that a state full of good ole baws would cave to something they hold so dear just b/c of the sjw, smfh

Just let its mascot be a fat, blonde white chick and call it a mud shark.

They missed the opportunity to just give George Lucas a pile of money, leave the name the rebels and change the mascot to admiral Akbar.

Because Colonel Sanders was a real person...not a slaveowner or a plantation owner. Hard to call a person playing a role of someone that actually existed racist, unless that person himself was a racist.

A lot of college programs are built on traditions. But all traditions have to start somewhere. I think it is a cool name, but it will take some time to get used to. A few generations before it becomes the norm. I know them as the rebels, that's what I've always known them as, and that's who I'll always know them as.
