Does Kirk Herbstreit Think This Year's National Champion Will Have An Asterisk?
Brad Mills-USA TODAY Sports
For obvious reasons, the upcoming 2020 college football season is going to be different. While on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville on Monday, Kirk Herbstreit discussed whether this year's National Champion will have an asterisk next to their name because of that...
quote:

“I’ve thought about that, and I think there will be an asterisk no matter what,” Herbstreit said, via 247Sports. “I just heard you guys before I came on talking about the AP Top 25. I think Ohio State was No. 2. Penn State was up there. Oregon was up there. All up in the top 10. If we just threw them in, for argument’s sake, and we asked the entire nation of analysts, ‘Who is going to be in your playoff?’ The consensus is probably going to be an Alabama or Georgia type of team, an Ohio State, a Clemson, and then an argument about is there a second SEC team or Big Ten team? Does Oregon make it? Does Oklahoma make it? That would be the discussion, so you’re really eliminating Ohio State, Oregon, and Penn State from the potential playoff.”
Do you agree?

There is an argument that there should be an asterisk, because some of the top teams aren't playing. You could also argue that it may be one of the more impressive team accomplishments because in addition to being the best of Clemson, Alabama, LSU, Florida, Florida State, Auburn and Texas - that is 14 of the past 15 national champions, they also overcame politics, a highly contagious virus, social isolation, etc. that no other team in the history of college football had to overcome (at least since World War II).

You could put an asterisk by every championship Except for Tiger at 96 Masters and 2000 U S Open

Bet the school that wins the 2020 championship won't have an asterisk on their banner.

Clemson** could get 2 asterisks if they win. One for their ACC practice schedule, and one for the Wuhan.

I can understand an asterisk if some teams played all games and some did not due to extenuating circumstances. But you are talking about teams and conferences who chose not to play the entire season. They did not play a game. You have no idea how good they would be. Why not put an asterisk every year because I am sure some star players get hurt on some teams and if the injury didn't happen, that team would have been a whole lot better?

Let's give the teams that don't play an asterisk next to their 0-0 records, because if they had played, maybe their record would have been 15-0.

Nope. The national championship is decided among all the eligible teams each year and this year is no different.

Sorry your Butteyes didn’t have the chest to play

It is awful hard to win a National Championship when you don't play. No asterisk. If you can beat out Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Oklahoma, Baylor, LSU etc. then you have earned it.

Did you go to Baylor or something?

Baylor?

Baylor is returning two starters on defense. Baylor might beat La Tech and Kansas this year. Might is the key word.

The asterisk will denote that the champion was a team not lead by pussies

Correct Kirk. You are eliminating said teams because they are not playing. If you want to be included, then play.
