Dabo Swinney Lists Off 4 Teams That Got ‘Punished’ This Season For Playing More Games
© Matt Cashore-USA TODAY Sports
While on ESPN this week discussing his ranking, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney listed off four teams that he believes were “punished” for playing more games than other teams (a.k.a Ohio State)...
quote:

“First of all, my vote don’t mean anything. But it means something to me, you know? It’s my poll. I do it. It creates a stir because we just so happen to be playing Ohio State. It has nothing to do with Ohio State — absolutely zero. You can change the name to Michigan or Georgia or Florida or Tennessee or Nebraska. Anytime you have a top-10 (ranking), it should be that special. This year it’s like really, really, really special and I wanted it to be that way. And so, I wanted to recognize the teams that played nine games or more. And so, if you didn’t play nine games, I just didn’t consider you for the Top 10. That’s why (the Buckeyes) were 11 (on Swinney’s Coaches Poll ballot),” Swinney said.

“Obviously, they’re a great team. They’re plenty good enough and talented enough to beat us and good enough to win the national championship. But in my opinion, I don’t think that it’s right that three teams have to play 13 games to win it all and one team has to play eight. What universe am I living in? And it has nothing to with them. It was about qualifying. And I didn’t think they were qualified, based on the number of games, versus all these other teams. … In my opinion — Texas A&M, Florida, Oklahoma, Cincinnati — they got punished for playing more games.”

Nobody punished OU. They lost to Kansa State and Iowa State- it’s their own fault.

Yeah, but suppose they had played 11 games and skipped those 2 they'd be undefeated like Ohio state... the point being no one knows what Ohio State's record would be had they played 5 more games, but historically they have always dropped a "what the hell just happened" game to a team they should have beat comfortably.

100% agreeing with this. We were missing key players then and are better now but no way we belong in the playoffs. I do think it's BS that OSU is in

You are 100% correct Dabo. There several other teams that are more deserving than a 6 win Ohio State. Typical liberal media bias toward one of the Golden Programs of college football. But your Clemson Tigers can prove your point by "Drumming" the Buckie Eyes in the CFP!

Adding "liberal media" as a qualifier to bias in this scenario makes you sound retarded. It's just bias, and it's bias from everyone.

Oh look, it’s Jaw Are pathetically trying to convince the world that liberal bias doesn’t exist

Guess it will be clemson vs bama in the final as I have this movie more than a few times before

Dabo’s point is “shite happens” in CFB. Playing 6 games as opposed to 10-11 is a huge advantage.

I disagree respectfully. A 6 win team (midseason) is still working on cohesion. A 10 win team is firing on all cylinders at this point.

Habanos, I agree that they’re still working the bugs out, but what makes it beneficial to OSU has to do with less opportunities to slip up due to playing fewer games. OSU seems to find a way to lose one they shouldn’t every year. This is the first time in like 8yrs that they didn’t lose a regular season game and only playing 6 games helped them avoid the slip up. You’d thing they’d reward an undefeated 10 win team over a 6 win team. Either way, it’s done now so they all just need to drop it and play.

More reason why the NCAA got it wrong. This was the perfect year to introduce a 8 team playoff but they blew it. The bowl games are not exciting anymore accept maybe 2-3 games.

They got it right imo, to hell with A&M!!!

By "punished" he means played more games and took a loss because of that, and decreased CFP chance. Cincinnati is undefeated and wasn't "punished" for playing more games. They were punished for playing high schools all year.

Ohio State played High School teams compared to their talent level real talk. The Big 10 is cheeks.

Florida had to play Bama, UGA, and TAMU on the road. Those 3 teams combine for a 26-3 record. Ohio St's top 3 teams combine for a 16-8 record.

The main issue from my perspective is injuries. Every addition game you play there is a much greater chance of sustaining key injuries that could hurt your team in the playoffs. Playing 3 or 4 fewer games is huge in that regard.

They did not get punished for playing fewer games. If they played fewer, they still would not have been selected.

One of the few times i agree with him. Its going to be bama and clemson anyway

nobody cared when LSU had to beat bama 2x to win the championship, so I don't care about Dabo's whiny complaint either.

He wanted an easier semi match up. Though I agree with him, he's whines like a bitch.

we got the playoff because the rematch game LSU should have played OSU that year and would have remained undefeated

This is no different than a typical year when teams play radically different out of conference schedules, and some conferences play 9 games in-conference and others 8.

Ohio State getting in with 6 total games is a fricking joke.

Well, he's actually right on this occasion. Ohio State doesn't deserve to be in the playoffs.

He is punishing OSU. None of those other teams are being punished or had a chance to win it all. If they did, they would not have lost and would be in.

Cincy should've been in over Notre Dame. They went undefeated and won 3 games against top 25 teams. They did what they were supposed to winning games convincingly and deserved a shot. If you are going to leave them out simply because their roster lacks the star ratings then why do we even play the games?
