Michigan State hired Colorado's Mel Tucker as their next head coach on Wednesday, and apparently, Nick Saban played a major role in helping them fill a role many passed on. Tucker had two stints under Nick Saban: in 2000 he was Saban’s first DBs coach at LSU and in 2015 he was back as an assistant head coach and DBs coach. Per Detroit News...
quote:

“‘I’m very interested in Michigan State having the right person,'” Saban said in the phone call, according to the source. “And they weren’t bashful about asking Nick.”

[…]

In his conversations with MSU officials, Saban is said to have stressed Tucker’s recruiting efforts, as well as his ties to the South, which is a football recruiting hotbed. Tucker was defensive coordinator at Georgia for three seasons. Saban also stressed to MSU that a mix of college and NFL coaching experiences is a plus, rather than an imbalance toward one over the other.

It amazes me how many of these guys from Lovie's rotting tree are getting jobs. Pep Hamilton...Rod Marinelli...Perry Fewell...Bum Tucker. The only decent DC he had in Chicago was a guy with Chicago roots who he fired. That coach lasted in Carolina until last season ands is now in DC. ...He was fired in 2007 by Lovie because with Bears blood he was always a threat to replace worthless Lovie. With him they (and not GB) beat Pittsburgh in SB XLV. Tucker is dogshit. Couldn't coach a defense with a HOF DE, 2 HOF linebackers, a HOF CB, and an above average DL. Losing record at Colorado in his only year. Now after baling after 1 year there how can he go recruit against tOSU/MICH/WI/ND and convince them he'll be there all 4 years? MSU is going to be competing with the MAC directional schools in his own state for prospects. Dumb move by all.

He hired the guy three different times. What’s he gonna say, he’s a bum?

Of course he’s interested. Wouldn’t it be nice for Ohio state to play a couple of teams with a pulse rather than that middle school shite they’d had lately.

He didn’t recommend Houston Nutt?

I thought for sure he would recommend Miles to go up there and beat up on Harfag at Michigan.

For those not familiar with this story, Saban wanted Nutt to replace him when he left LSU. Nutt went on to destroy the Ole Miss program from within and has been out of coaching since.
