LSU signs 25 players en route to No. 1 class

UPDATE: Barbe DB Janzen Jackson has signed with Tennessee.
Yesterday was a banner day for Les Miles and the LSU Football program as 25 players signed Letters of Intent to play football for the Tigers. LSU finished No. 1 in the recruiting rankings according to ESPN and CBS. Included in the class were the top-ranked QB (Russell Sheperd), the top-ranked WR (Rueben Randle) and the top-ranked safety (Craig Loston).

National Signing Day was not without some drama. Tiger fans were shocked to learn that WR DeAngelo Benton signed with Auburn after announcing he was signing with LSU just days earlier. It turns out that his scholarship offer was pulled in order to secure Rueben Randle's signature.
Also, Sam Montgomery, No. 6 weak side defensive end out of Greenwood, SC, made a surprise live announcement on ESPNU that he was signing with LSU. Montgomery was expected to sign with North Carolina. Adding to the drama was Montgomery's comment afterwards that he and top-ranked RB Trent Richardson might attend the same school. Richardson ended up signing with Alabama.
LSU is still waiting on the decision of one more player. Barbe DB Janzen Jackson decided to delay his decision until this morning. His mother missed her flight to Lake Charles yesterday, and Jackson decided to wait until she was with him at the signing. There is talk of Tennessee making a big push to land Jackson. Jackson is supposed to announce his decision at 9am CT this morning.
In other LSU Football news, lost in the excitement of National Signing Day was the fact that the NCAA granted defensive lineman Charles Alexander a 6th year of eligibilty. Alexander, who has been plagued with injuries much of his LSU career, is expected to start on a line that is losing three starters to the NFL and graduation.
In LSU Basketball news, the Tigers traveled to Georgia and spanked the Bulldogs, 80-62. Marcus Thornton scored 30 points, Tasmin Mitchell added 27 and LSU won its sixth straight SEC game. The Tigers, who improved to 18-4 (6-1 in SEC), return to action on Sunday when they host Alabama, the only team to hand them an SEC loss. Tip-off in the PMAC is scheduled for noon.
