Multiple sources are reporting that Mississippi State defensive coordinator Zach Arnett flew to Baton Rouge Tuesday morning to interview with Ed Orgeron for the DC position on LSU's staff.

Ben Portnoy with The Dispatch was the first to report the news:
quote:

The Dispatch learned Tuesday morning that Arnett boarded an LSU-chartered plane bound for Baton Rouge. A source with immediate knowledge of the situation told The Dispatch Arnett's involvement with the Tigers' vacant defensive coordinator job is currently "just a conversation," and that nothing had been signed as of Tuesday morning.

Arnett, who just completed his first season at MSU, received a three-year extension worth north of $1 million annually in December according to a separate source.

A former linebacker at New Mexico, Arnett instituted a 3-3-5 system at MSU this fall that helped the Bulldogs finish with the fifth best unit in the Southeastern Conference despite a massive overhaul that included opt outs and injuries. Most notably, the Bulldogs upset the then-No. 6 Tigers during Week 1 in Baton Rouge, the same day LSU honored its 2019 national championship team.
Portnoy reports that Arnett is also being mentioned for the defensive coordinator jobs at Texas and Oregon.

Hes the guy that a bunch of people want on the coaching changes board. I like him He runs a defense that would fit our talent and it's better against the spread then 4-3..look how good he did at Mississippi state ,they were starting multiple walk ons

According to Wikipedia, “ . . . Under him, San Diego State ranked 32nd in total defense in 2018 and 2nd in 2019, which was a 30-place gain from the year before” I’m not going to pretend like I know what I’m talking about, but that stat seems reassuring to me

*Could* be a good hire. I believe the 3-3-5 he implemented at Miss St wasn't too far off of what Aranda liked to do on a lot of packages, and I believe it was mostly done to fit the talent they had on the team when he arrived. I think he could install either a 3-4 or 4-3 base if that's what Orgeron wants and the talent fits. The imortant part is that he took the approach of molding his scheme to maximize the roster. That's an important trait for successful coaches/coordinators coming into a situation where an overhaul is required. Not saying he's the guy ... just saying it might not be a bad hire if he does well in the interview process.

What about the 4-4-3? It would eliminate a safety!
