Multiple sources are reporting that LSU defensive tackle Maason Smith will serve a one-game suspension against Florida State after receiving an improper benefit.

Smith will be able to return in Week 2 vs. Grambling. Per NOLA.com:
quote:

LSU star defensive tackle Maason Smith will not play in the Tigers' season opener Sept. 3 against Florida State because of a one-game NCAA suspension, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told The Advocate on Wednesday.

The NCAA determined Smith received an improper benefit, sources said. Although Smith cooperated with an investigation, sources said, the NCAA ruled him out for the first game. He can return in Week 2 for the home opener against Grambling.

Without Smith, No. 5 LSU will miss one of its best defensive players against the No. 8 Seminoles in the only top 10 matchup of opening weekend.

So, he gets hurt last year and can’t face his suspension and then the NCAA chooses the FSU game for us.
The enforcement guy is a former FSU AD?

Not only that, but he missed his entire year. Was this not punishment enough? And then this happened a week before NIL goes live.

With NIL, what is an impermissible benefit nowadays?

I don't think Smith was 100%, I think BK knew this was coming, that's why Smith was on the sidelines most of the week. BK is prepared, having worked different DL personnel in Smith's positions.

Well, it's better than what happened last year, he got knocked out for whole year.

Why do something if you don't know if it is legal or not? Will it get LSU in trouble or affect my eligibility? How hard is it to find out the answer to that question before accepting money? Simple common sense. This is on the guy with the black cloud that keeps following.

College football needs to branch away from NCAA. They're far too large a liability to the product and contribute nothing to its value. Like a rich guy with a 250+ lb wife and the wife is bossing him around. Drop her. 0 value.

This is the stupidest sh!t I’ve ever heard. A TWO YEAR OLD penalty for a violation that isn’t even a violation anymore. NCAA is an absolute joke.

HOW STUPID IS THIS IN THE NIL ERA? IT'S OBVIOUSLY AN ATTEMPT BY THE NCAA TO SIMPLY HURT LSU. SAD. BECAUSE IF IT WASN'T AND THEY CARED ABOUT THE PLAYER OR THE PRODUCT, THEY WOULD SAY THE TEAM CAN CHOOSE THE GAME HE SITS OUT FOR. JOHNNY MANZEL GOT 1/2 GAME SUSPENSION FOR MAKING OVER 100,000 SIGNING. I KNOW THIS GUY DIDN'T MAKE THAT.

NIL requires some sort of contract, correct? I doubt NIL is just.... "hey, show up and does this and we hand you cash".

@ southern... what you just said is literally a contract.. show up and do this and we hand you cash... aka contract.

FSU will need as much help as they can get and they will still get their butts kicked. Who would give info to hurt this kid to the NCAA? It is a , likely, predatory future NFL money chaser or a competitor. Anyone hating on the kid for this is a PURE-IDIOT.

Just another reason the NCAA will soon fade away. College football is heading towards the genuine JV of the NFL.
