Multiple sources are reporting that LSU defensive tackle Maason Smith will serve a one-game suspension against Florida State after receiving an improper benefit.

Smith will be able to return in Week 2 vs. Grambling. Per NOLA.com:

LSU star defensive tackle Maason Smith will not play in the Tigers' season opener Sept. 3 against Florida State because of a one-game NCAA suspension, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told The Advocate on Wednesday.

The NCAA determined Smith received an improper benefit, sources said. Although Smith cooperated with an investigation, sources said, the NCAA ruled him out for the first game. He can return in Week 2 for the home opener against Grambling.

Without Smith, No. 5 LSU will miss one of its best defensive players against the No. 8 Seminoles in the only top 10 matchup of opening weekend.

Alabama has dealt with a ton of starting defensive players lost to injuries over the last 5 years. Trust me

No one is talking about injuries. What a diversion! Do NCAA sanctions = injuries?

In the age of NIL how are there improper benefits anymore?

why not just appeal, let him play Week 1 while the appeal runs its course, and then take the suspension WK2. That’s what everyone does now anyway

There are benefits the NCAA still classifies as improper?

So he signed an autograph 2 years ago and they wait until right before the game to suspend him? What a bunch of pussies.

Anybody else remember when star basketball player brandon Miller for Alabama delivered a murder weapon to assist the killing of a young woman? NCAA didn't care then, why they care about this? GTFOH

Suspend him for Grambling

this is why we need "tune up" games

Why? The ncaa would just pick a harder game.

This is why the NCAA needs replacing -- a week before the season starts you come up with some bullshite violation. Mason must be heartbroken he doesn't get redemption against FSU. Shitty regulatory structure!

Now LSU will only win by 17!

As much as I think NIL and the B1G/SEC superconferences are gonna kill college football, the NCAA needs to go frick itself.

This is the stupidest sh!t I’ve ever heard. A TWO YEAR OLD penalty for a violation that isn’t even a violation anymore. NCAA is an absolute joke.

The NCAA needs to go on and just quit. They are pointless and useless

Only one explanation: NCAA officials have money on the game.
