LSU Walk-On RB Enters The NCAA Transfer Portal

LSU sophomore walk-on running back Justin Jones has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal, according to NOLA.com:

Jones, a sophomore, is not obligated to transfer by entering the transfer database, but it does allow other programs to contact him if he does choose to leave LSU.

Jones is a 5-foot-8, 184-pound walk-on running back from Dallas. He saw time in four games this season, suiting up against Louisiana Tech, Ole Miss, Rice and UCF, but did not record any statistics.

No problem with this...if he has no scholarship and doesn’t expect playing time, I see no reason to expect hi or feel committed to stay. Best of luck to him...

It took a lot of courage to pass up other offers and test his skills. I wish him the best. There are many with dreams of being a Tiger, recruiting doesn’t find them all so they have to have enough chest to come

Even a walk on will have to sit out a year unless he transfers down to D1AA (Southeastern size) or lower.He probably realized after walking on the talent level at LSU and does not see a chance to ever earn a scholly or play...Good luck to the young man...The portal has made transferring into free agency now...Before they had to be released before they could talk to another program.... This will hurt many schools depth chart as now every kid doesn't want to wait to play they can shop themselves...

I disagree. I think this is good for college football. The “sit out a year rule” is still in place And once you enter your name in the portal, the school has the right to yank your scholly if they choose, so it’s not like transferring no longer has consequences. It just streamlines things and prevents schools from screwing a kid out of a chance to play elsewhere.

“Transfer portal” sounds so weird. Kind of like asking Scotty to beam you from LSU to your destination school of choice.

I'm not sure I understand. If you're a walk on and, I assume, not on scholarship...why can't you just leave and go where you want?

He has been in LSU's offence this year, why let him take that knowledge to another school you may compete against. If this is allowed, Saban will offer a scholarship to a walk on from every SEC School.

Okay, what exactly is a transfer portal? Hearing this for the first time.

It's an NCAA designed list of players who want to transfer. The transfer enters their name on the Portal List and other programs get the list and are allowed to contact said player.

Basically it cuts the school out of the transfer process. Before, you’d have to get permission from the school whom you’re currently on scholarship with (and that school could try to stop you). With the transfer portal, the student just enters his name and that immediately allows him to talk to/visit other schools.
