Sports Illustrated reports that LSU is self-imposing penalties for rules violations after an investigation uncovered booster payments to the father of a former player Vadal Alexander and for Odell Beckham Jr. giving out cash to players after the National Championship last season.

The report also notes an impermissible recruiting contact by head coach Ed Orgeron in January of 2019.

LSU will forfeit eight football scholarships over a two-year period and reduce recruiting visits, evaluations, and communication with recruits. Beckham Jr. is also banned from LSU facilities for two years.

Here the details on the violations:
quote:

• The father of former offensive lineman Vadal Alexander received $180,000 in stolen money from LSU booster John Paul Funes, who admitted in 2019 that he embezzled more than half a million dollars from Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge. The money was payment from 2012 to 2017 for what the NCAA characterized as a “no-show job.”

• Beckham’s cash payments to players immediately after the Tigers won the championship. LSU officials initially told reporters that Beckham was handing out fake money, but later retracted that assertion after quarterback Joe Burrow acknowledged in an interview that the cash was real. LSU said the payments totaled $2,000, a Level III violation.

• An impermissible recruiting contact in January 2019 by LSU coach Ed Orgeron. The school self-imposed recruiting restrictions on Orgeron.

Can we self impose a ban on Ryan Clark from the football team and facilities for life?

Clark still butt hurt his son did not get LSU scholly when Moffitt’s no talent son received scholly. Not sure why LSU turned away from their CHS pipeline for real players - their OL could have used a few more character kids

Lol blaming Burrow...they got it all on camera moron. Anyone with half a brain knew it was real money. You think OBJ walks around with monopoly money on him? Odell is a clown.

Burrow was no longer a player at LSU.

"In its favor, LSU no longer employs two high-ranking athletic department members, athletic director Joe Alleva and football coach Les Miles, who were in their positions during the booster payments."

Some of you need to get a grip. This season is a joke anyway. It is being played to make money and that is it. How legitimate is it to have some conferences playing 7 games and 8 games and others playing 10 and 11? The games are terrible and the quality of play is just bad. With no Spring, no true Fall practice because teams were limited to 20 hours a week of practice time how do you install a new Defense or prepare a new Defense with a new Defensive Coordinator? Then consider LSU is down 19 players from last season and if you couldn’t see where this was going then you are beyond naive. And now we lose Brennan. Just sit back and understand this is a thrown together season and get ready for next year.

Yeah all that sounds great on paper, but if LSU was undefeated and steamrolling teams then this season would be as "legitimate" as any other. Arkansas and Ole Miss installed new EVERYTHING in the same covid climate as LSU.
user avatar
rob6242 months
Random Hero, Arkansas did not lose 19 players or have 14 players drafted. Have you not watched the caliber of play in virtually every college game this season. Did you watch OU and Texas? Bama and Ole Miss? A&M and Florida? LSU’s defense has been terrible but so has everybody else’s. It all reflects a lack of practice. That is simply the truth. You can wring your hands if you choose but I have already put an asterisk by this season. Wait until the BIG and PAC12 start playing. You are going to have more unprepared teams and you will see the same thing with sloppy football and crappy play. This year is just thrown together for TV money and to pay bills. I want to get something out of it like experience for young players so we can be ready for next season. That’s just me because I can’t judge anything by this season.

They are down more than 30 players from the 2019 roster and Pelini sucks lsu needs a defense coordinator since they do not have one

if ever there was a year to accept a bowl ban this might be it. That weedwacker bowl can suck it!
user avatar
rob6242 months
This whole year is a fraud. I understand why it is being played but no tailgating, few fans, no band, zero atmosphere, poorly prepared teams from having little practice, some conferences playing 7 or 8 games, and bowls will have teams in them with just 2 or 3 wins. I really cannot take this season very seriously.

This is meaningless to us. We only have 70 players on scholarship right now. We can sign 25 a year. With the losses this year and signing our 25 players over the next 2 years, maybe to get to 76 (85 max scholarship minus 8 penalty) by the time the penalty ends, which is where we would have probabaly been anyway.

What losses? Only players leaving are the ones going to the NFL. No one is spending a year of eligibility.

Have Vadel and his father pay the money back by what ever means possible !! $180'000. for a player who couldn"t block his mama. Miles should have been fired after 2011 season.

The loss of eight scholarships will hurt...I think that means we lose 8 recruits in 2 years or more likely...the walk-ons that are competing for scholarships can forget it...
user avatar
BigTimer2342 months
You’re wrong. It’s 4 each year off the total of 85 available. We’re nowhere near 85, and we can still sign a full 25 man class

Self-imposed. As always. NCAA never would've done shite about any of this. I don't see UGA, Bama, and the others self-imposing for their obvious infractions

Ryan didn’t break any rules. I don’t like his influence on the team any more than you do and wish he stayed away, but everything he did was legal. OBJ is a cancer.

Awesome considering how low we are on scholarships already.
user avatar
CanebreakCajun42 months
We’re not low on scholarships, those players (chase, Shelvin and vincent) are opt outs who’s scholarships haven’t been filled because of when they opted out.
user avatar

You're right, I jumped to conclusions. This doesn't affect our 25 spots per year.

What does the above have to do with this season? Generally curious this shite is from 5-6 years ago holds no bearing on this season. OBJ just headlines the BS with his antics.
user avatar
Might be a dumb question, but has any other athletic department ever given THEMSELVES imposed bans instead of the NCAA doing it?
user avatar

Yes plenty of schools has.

Yes, the NCAA says that they intend for the system to be "self-policing," so you have to offer penalties to start. Question now is if the COI will accept this.
