LSU CB Jay Ward Played Saturday After Preseason Surgery On A Torn Meniscus

LSU coach Ed Orgeron joined 104.5 ESPN's "Off The Bench" Tuesday morning and revealed that sophomore cornerback Jay Ward tore a meniscus in preseason camp and missed two weeks of practice.

Prior to the season opener vs. Mississippi State, Orgeron said he was not sure if Ward would be healthy enough to play Week 1 but he was needed against the Bulldogs passing attack with All-American cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. out. Per The Advocate:

"Jay Ward had a meniscus tear and had a slight operation on his knee and was just coming back," Orgeron said in the interview. "And hadn't practiced at all. There were some things there that we were hampered by."

Orgeron commented on Ward's play during Monday's press conference.

"Jay Ward was out for practice two weeks. We didn't even know he could play. He played a lot of snaps. I thought he did a fairly good job, but obviously was a little rusty there."

Which begs the question, why have these guys chasing drags, crosses and go routes for 4 hours when you don't have the depth to do so? They were all gassed by halftime. It showed in the second half. Thanks Bo, way to adapt to the circumstances at hand

what do you suggest? Go into zone with players who have not practiced and likely have no idea of their assignments? It really really sucks and it showed. But man to man was likely the only option.

@Lsu101205 -- I dont suggest anything in particular. I dont get paid 2.3 million dollars a year to make those decisions. Maybe he should have had a contingency plan knowing the combination of injuries and new players were looming. You can play man without blitzing. you can rush 3 or 4 and provide extra support on the back end.

Glad Coach O admitted to getting out coached with zero adjustments made after half time. The excuses do get old but Stingley hurt us big time

He sure made no point to make adjustments, sure not like last season where made adjustments even before half time like vs Clemson.

We didn’t really blitz all that much we ran 3,4,5 man vs 5 6 man protection on most plays
