LSU head coach Brian Kelly held his weekly Monday press conference this afternoon to preview the upcoming Mississippi State game on Saturday night at Tiger Stadium. Here are some updates:
-Brian Kelly on the Southern win: Great to get back home in Tiger Stadium. Starting fast was crucial. Jayden Daniels played well, and special team was better. A good victory but now everything is heightened as we get into SEC play.
-Brian Kelly on Mississippi State: It is a precision offense. It's going to come down to our attention to detail. It's like the triple option. You have to take care of your assignment and do your job otherwise you are going to get exposed.
-Brian Kelly on John Emery Jr: We're excited about getting him back. It's been a long run. He has worked hard to get to this point. But let's be careful as he has not played in a while. We can't put a lot of expectation on him in his first game back.
-Brian Kelly says he expects BJ Ojulari to be available against MSU, based on his talks with the doctors.
-Brian Kelly on Jayden Daniels: He's extremely coachable. He has three years of starting experience, and you can sense that when he comes to the sideline.
-Brian Kelly says the TD pass from Daniels to Bech was a sign of growth for the QB. He could have run but stuck in there and threw a TD. "If we can continue to see that, he becomes very difficult to contain."
-Brian Kelly said he spoke to Garrett Nussmeier about the interceptions. Says Nussmeier is pressing a little bit to improve. But he did some really good things too.
-Brian Kelly is pleased with what he saw from the starting OL from the Southern game. Sounds like it will stick. Happy with freshman Emery Jones.
-Brian Kelly says OSU DB transfer Sevyn Banks is close to being ready. He wanted to play in the opener. Didn't need him for SU but it's all hands on deck vs. MSU. The expectation is that he is going to be dressed out for Saturday. Hopefully, he's in the rotation.
-Brian Kelly says MSU's air raid offense is like the triple option. They run it better than you can defend it with three days of preparation.
-Brian Kelly on new punt returner Greg Clayton Jr. Says Frank Wilson was able to get him here as a transfer. A Louisiana native... Glad he's here helping our team.
-Brian Kelly is happy with the play of sophomore DE Saivion Jones. He's consistent and solid with his job assignment.
-Kelly says freshman LB Harold Perkins helped play nickel vs. SU. He didn't have a lot of time to prepare, but he accepted it and had a great attitude.
-Kelly on Micah Baskerville, who was suspended but won his appeal... says they kept him on the team with hopes he could play well for them. "He's really good in pass coverage. He's really smart."
-Brian Kelly thought Greg Brooks Jr. played well at safety and helped with communication. Jay Ward will play nickel.
