The return to Tiger Stadium as LSU's defensive coordinator didn't exactly go the way Bo Pelini wanted on Saturday vs. Mississippi State. The Tigers defensive gave up 623 passing yards and six touchdowns in the 44-34 opening loss to the Bulldogs.

On Monday, head coach Ed Orgeron said that Pelini was the first one to come up to him after the game to take blame for the loss.
quote:

"He's the first guy to come see me in my dressing room. First guy. He said, Coach, I should have done a better job. And he was hurting just like everybody else. And we went over the film, and he saw the things that he did well, saw the things that we must and will improve. He's been fantastic today. He's eager. He's an outstanding coach. He's hurting just like everybody else."

"Bo gave great speeches on Friday night. He handles the defense. He's very emotional. You know, he's been a head coach. He knows how to talk to the football team. He had the guys motivated. He's been very, I want to say not apologetic, not humble, but just, hey, you know what, I could have done better, Coach. Very loyal, hurt, you know, hurting that he didn't do better, hurting that the defense didn't do better, just like we all are. But I told him, hey, put it on me, we're going to get it fixed."
The Tigers look to get back on track this Saturday at Vanderbilt. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on the SEC Network.

Some of you LSU fans seriously crack me up how incredibly fast you go straight to scuttling the ship. LSU lost a ton of rock star athletes and coaches from last year all of the field. This is by any team’s definition a huge rebuilding year, but even then, this team will drastically improve. They will work this out.

I'm with you. Been down this road before as an LSU fan. The team is too talented not to improve. We'll see a totally different effort on Saturday.

Tommy, you need to back into exile where I sent you in the first place lest you top your reigning best melt of all time. Keep those half decade old “jokes” alive, drunky.

Disappointed of course you should be they did not play comparable to last year whatsoever. But truthfully that is expected when you lose almost your entire team. These kids have not had the offseason learning and reps that they would normally have. They will get better but we likely have one of if not the youngest least experienced team at this point in college. Covid-19 didnt do them any favors in the offseason either.

Ed O won't be so kind with the Flowery words next game you can just tell. Pellini welcome back to the SEC we have high and higher standards here.

Can't you make some changes DURING the game? You have to stay in the same scheme most of the game looking for different results as they light your arse up?

can't make changes during a game --if you have not trained your guys where to be or how to react.

the team is "trained" on zone defense. they should have tried something different.

This is my biggest concern with Pelini moving forward. I don’t trust him to match wits in-game with some of the creative offensive minds in the conference. I mean, change SOMETHING for Christ sakes. Even if it’s just line up all 11 guys side by side like a kick off 20 yards off the line of scrimmage and say whatever you do, don’t let them get past this line. Lol

Well, Lou Tepper was our DC from 1997-1999 and maybe the world's worst DC...He was followed by Bo Pellini and Bo's first game as DC was so bad the NO writers referred to it as the Tepperllini defense...After that first game, Bo's teams got much better including holding Oklahoma and its Heisman QB to 14 points in the National Championship game...let's give him a chance.

I think he should forfeit his salary for the first week. Maybe he should donate it to the needy. He certainly did not earn it.

All that coach speech doesn’t mean squat. Hell, he should be hurting and feeling guilty for not earning the roughly $200,000 per game salary. We won’t learn anything vs Vandy or Mizzou. Florida should be interesting.

I think the defense will be turnaround to and put together a respectable defense for the rest of the year. Poor O-line and QB play is what worries me the most...

We'll, we sucked in the start of 2017, improved dramatically and then went on to have the best season of all time in 2019. So as pathetic as that performance was, he has shown an ability to improve things.

bullshite response. Like great speeches and excuses make a difference. The amount of talent on the field was still superior to moo st and he shot the bed period
user avatar
ShadowTigerTX43 months
Not so sure the talent we actually had on the field in the secondary WAS in fact superior to Moo State's receivers.
user avatar
Chalkywhite8443 months
To the guy the below. We all know that the secondary is young, so sometimes run a zone or a 3 man rush. Pelini rushed 4 every play and played man On top of that he kept running that stupid stunt play where ali would have to loop inside and got no pressure. He was our best pass rusher and you're going to keep taking him out the play on 3rd
