Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports
Ed Orgeron joined 104.5 ESPN's "Off The Bench" Tuesday morning and talked about the new defensive hires on the staff.
Orgeron will formerly introduce new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones, linebacker coach Blake Baker, and defensive line coach Andre Carter on a zoom press conference Tuesday but here's what he had to say about them earlier...

On DC Daronte Jones:
quote:On LB coach Blake Baker:
"Yesterday in a meeting, he was using the same terms that we used at the University of Miami," Orgeron said. "I was listening to him talk and figured it out that when coach (Jimmy) Johnson went to the Cowboys, he brought the same terms to the Cowboys. And then Jones worked under Mike Zimmer who kept the same terms from coach Johnson. That's great lineage right there."
"He coached under Mike Zimmer and Mike Zimmer is an excellent coach, especially on the back end. With Jones' expertise on the back-end and I know he knows the front-end, and with me in there I think we can have a great defense."
quote:On Andre Carter:
"He wanted to be here. His wife played soccer at LSU. His wife is from Mandeville. They wanted to come back closer to family," Orgeron said. "Blake has worked some camps, and as you know was at Louisiana Tech and had done a great job. He's from Houston and will recruit the Houston area for us. It's kind of amazing that when I introduced him, some of the guys immediately wanted to say hello to him because he recruiting them. He's an outstanding recruiter."
"We were in a meeting yesterday, Daronte did a tremendous job of presenting his defense, but you know Blake being a defensive coordinator can help as a sounding board and give him some support in that room is just going to be a great mix."
quote:
"He came highly recommended by some people that I knew in the NFL," Orgeron said. "One of the guys I really trust is Joe Vitt. He was the associate head coach of the Saints. He called me and he loved Andre Carter. Andre coached Davon Godchaux with the Miami Dolphins, and he raved about him. He came here and had an excellent interview."
"I tried to recruit Andre in 1997, so we go way back. I remember we went up to Cal, played him. He had the quickest get-off I've ever seen of an end. He has 80 sacks in his career so he knows a lot about the pass rush. He's dynamic. I thought he'd be great for our guys in the room and we're happy to have him."
