Ed Orgeron joined 104.5 ESPN's "Off The Bench" Tuesday morning and talked about the new defensive hires on the staff.

Orgeron will formerly introduce new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones, linebacker coach Blake Baker, and defensive line coach Andre Carter on a zoom press conference Tuesday but here's what he had to say about them earlier...

On DC Daronte Jones:
quote:

"Yesterday in a meeting, he was using the same terms that we used at the University of Miami," Orgeron said. "I was listening to him talk and figured it out that when coach (Jimmy) Johnson went to the Cowboys, he brought the same terms to the Cowboys. And then Jones worked under Mike Zimmer who kept the same terms from coach Johnson. That's great lineage right there."

"He coached under Mike Zimmer and Mike Zimmer is an excellent coach, especially on the back end. With Jones' expertise on the back-end and I know he knows the front-end, and with me in there I think we can have a great defense."
On LB coach Blake Baker:
quote:

"He wanted to be here. His wife played soccer at LSU. His wife is from Mandeville. They wanted to come back closer to family," Orgeron said. "Blake has worked some camps, and as you know was at Louisiana Tech and had done a great job. He's from Houston and will recruit the Houston area for us. It's kind of amazing that when I introduced him, some of the guys immediately wanted to say hello to him because he recruiting them. He's an outstanding recruiter."

"We were in a meeting yesterday, Daronte did a tremendous job of presenting his defense, but you know Blake being a defensive coordinator can help as a sounding board and give him some support in that room is just going to be a great mix."
On Andre Carter:
quote:

"He came highly recommended by some people that I knew in the NFL," Orgeron said. "One of the guys I really trust is Joe Vitt. He was the associate head coach of the Saints. He called me and he loved Andre Carter. Andre coached Davon Godchaux with the Miami Dolphins, and he raved about him. He came here and had an excellent interview."

"I tried to recruit Andre in 1997, so we go way back. I remember we went up to Cal, played him. He had the quickest get-off I've ever seen of an end. He has 80 sacks in his career so he knows a lot about the pass rush. He's dynamic. I thought he'd be great for our guys in the room and we're happy to have him."

“...and with me in there I think we can have a great defense.” Les Miles was an offensive coach prior and we know how those units performed during his LSU tenure.

"with me in there" - get the frick out of X and O meetings Orgeron - that ain't your thing. You admitted micromanaging was your biggest flaw at Ole Miss.

He's a defensive minded coach, and the boss at that. Yea, he's going to sit in on meetings bro. Go back to our Golden Year. He said he lets his coaches coach, that's why he hires them.

Don't think that was the implication at all. I think O knew there was nothing he could do about the shitstorm last season on D. I think he wants to be more plugged in this season to make sure things are headed in the right direction.

“With Jones' expertise on the back-end and I know he knows the front-end, and with me in there I think we can have a great defense." This is a scary statement.

Why? DL is O's thing.

Because he needs to keep his fat boudin fingers away from the scheme and let his coaches coach. He has a history of sticking his nose into what his coordinators are doing and has made it worse every time.

These are make or break hires for Coach O. Either the defense brings LSU back to title contention or its time to move on.
