Ed Orgeron Comments On The Direction Of The Program & Team Culture During Monday's Presser

LSU's 2020 struggles continued on Saturday night vs. Texas A&M with the Tigers suffering their fourth loss of the season.

The team took another hit on Sunday when star wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. announced he was opting out of the season.

With games left against No. 1 Alabama and No. 5 Florida, LSU could be looking at a six-loss season after going 15-0 the previous year and winning the National Championship.

During his weekly press conference on Monday, Ed Orgeron was asked about the direction of the program and the team culture. Here's what he had to say:

Q. This year it's been challenging. You, the face of the program, the head coach, where is this program heading? Where is the light at the end of this kind of dark 2020 tunnel?

ED ORGERON: We built a championship program. We will be champions again. Recruiting is going well. We got some great young players. We had some stuff we have to get fixed, I know we have to fix it. I've done it before and I'll do it again.

Q. I know you're big on culture. Pete Carroll your mentor has talked to you about that. Do you feel good about the culture inside your building?

ED ORGERON: I feel good about what we built here over my length as the head coach. I think that we have some things to work on, we have some leadership things to work on. I have some things to work on to get better. Overall I think we built a great culture inside the building. This year has been a challenge obviously with COVID-19, other stuff going on, has kind of put a little spin on everything. You don't know when the next guy is going to opt out, who has opted out. I think overall we built a good culture here and we have a good, young foundation.

All of these pathetic excuses in the comments board. Everyone else is dealing with Covid, coaching losses and player losses. But Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State are still In the playoff hunt like they are every year.

I have yet to see coach O underachieve with a talent filled roster like CLM did, until that day comes, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. We don't have to be 2019 LSU to win a championship if we are 75% we can win titles.

Lack of talent is not the reason for this season's struggles. Yes LSU lost a unbelievable amount of talent in the offseason, but LSU's roster is also still stacked with talent because LSU has been hauling in top 10 recruiting classes for over 10 years. We are 7 games into a season so being inexperienced in no longer excuse except for the QB position since we have a true freshman starting since the QB that started season is out due to injury. The reason for LSU's struggles this season is the same reason for LSU's struggles under CLM which was and still is insufficient talent development. That is due to bad assistant coaching hires. Coach O has shown to be worse than CLM at hiring assistants. LSU's underachieving this season is worse than anything that we saw under CLM (we are likely to finish with a losing record and miss a bowl game). The only reasons that are remotely acceptable for giving CoachO the benefit of the doubt about the future is that he is more open and honest about the current state of the program than CLM was and he has a record of making changes (even if they turn out bad) when changes need to be made. However this should not be a discussion of CEO vs CLM (that discussion was for 2016) but a discussion about why LSU can't just keep rolling year in and year out like Bama, OSU, OU, and Clemson do?

Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, etc. None of them have had what I would call generational QB's. Sure they have had some win the Heisman and put up big numbers. But yet those schools don't have drop off years like this, or problems in the locker room like this.

@kracka - none of them are on Joe’s level. But take joe out and compare their average qb talent and play over the last decade. Guarantee their averages will destroy LSU QBs season average for any year. Those schools consistently have quarterbacks drafted in top rounds, Heisman conversations, and great records. Quarterback play is a big problem, but I think the drop off is mainly due to offensive line struggles and poor coaching scheme. They do not stress getting the ball to the best playmakers, questionable play calling, horrendous protection in pocket and lack of consistent running game, and the continuous rotation of wide receivers where you take better playmakers off the field are more damaging than our quarterbacks right now.

This year is a real mess, on a lot of levels. First you lose a historic amount of talent to the draft, graduation, Covid opt-outs, and coaching job defections. Secondly, Covid hits and your prep time to get all the new starters ready takes a hit. Then, your starting QB goes down, and you have to rely on two true freshmen. I mean, at some point you just have to realize that no coach in O's situation would be truly successful right now. This season requires adjusted expectations and work toward the next two seasons of success with the game experience that younger players are getting now. Does it suck? Sure. Is it the end of the world? Nah. We'll be strong again next season.

Can’t really balk at most of what you said. But, you better well understand that 2021 will not tolerate excuses. I won’t compare O to Saban nor Dabo. That’s an unfair comparison. But, the yard pass has been used now.

Keep the poison away from the players. There is a reason most head coaches keep the alumni at an arms distance from the team. It seems like we sure do have problems that other “championship” prgrams are not having (see AL, Clemoson, OSU)

I don't know if he will or won't, but 90+ % of the people on this site swore he would never sniff an SEC or national title (I never thought he would win a national title), so our opinions probably don't matter.

I'm with you Big EZ, I suspect over 90% of the negatigers on here never thought he would sniff a winning season. I began to truly believe in O when after a gump loss, he laid it out, get bigger, stronger on both sides of the line. He did that and sprinkled in a once in a lifetime QB and the greatest college football ever was built. I believe O WILL do it again. GEAUX TIGERS

Yeah the not commenting specifically about this year's culture is troubling. He knows it's an issue and talking more in the culture overall since he has been there.

Im not understanding the problem with the culture. Please fill me in someone. I truly hope this isn’t about the KIDS marching for social justice. If that’s a cultural problem. Maybe the only problem is that the’re investing their time and energy into the wrong program.

Honestly I wasn’t a fan of the O hire initially as I didn’t see his prior coaching as a reason to give him the keys to the car. But, he said he’d make changes and he did. I will forever be grateful for 2019. Doing our annual December New York trip and getting to meet Burrow outside the Sony theatre will be something I will cherish forever. With that said, O needs to get his personal life in order. He’s the leader and the leader can’t have his personal life out of order to the point that it’s distracting him AND others. He seems to acknowledge some deficiencies on the staff and a leadership void. Again, as someone who thought his hire was lazy, he proved me wrong. Whether that was lightening in a bottle with the Joe’s or not, he did it. I’ll have faith in him doing it again. If not, 2022 his culottes are on fire.

This means it's much worse for LSU than even thought. There isn't just one thing or a simple leadership void problem with this team. The only thing that isn't crap is our Punter and (outside of the miss Saturday) the kicker.
