ESPN college football analyst Desmond Howard appeared on College Football Live Tuesday and put a lot of blame on new LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker for the Tigers Week 1 loss to USC. Per On3:
quote:

“Well guys, when I watch a game of this magnitude, I think about the storylines. One of the biggest storylines coming into this season was how LSU, they went out and got Blake Baker from Missouri as their defensive coordinator. They made him the highest-paid assistant coach in the FBS. … Because their defense was trash last year,” Desmond Howard said.

“I’m saying, ‘OK, this is the moment.’ There’s always the moment. Either it’s the Heisman moment or a moment as a coach, where you can separate yourself from the other coaches. And when USC had the ball with less than two minutes left, I said ‘This it the Blake Baker moment. Is he going to live up to the hype, to the amount of money they paid for him to come to Baton Rouge?’”

“They failed miserably,” Howard said. “So I’m looking at this Blake Baker experience right now thinking, ‘You know, they played well. Don’t get it twisted. The defense played better than they did a year ago.’

“But when you’re the highest-paid assistant then this is the moment where you start to separate yourself from the rest of the DCs, because you make a big stop in a big game against the USC Trojans, and they weren’t able to do that. They came up short.”

True! Bottom line was D played much better, but when it counted at end of game the defense did not get a stop!

I didn't realize he was the highest paid DC. that seems silly. The defense is better than last year, obviously, but I don't think it's anywhere near good enough to warrant that kind of price tag. I mean it's Blake Baker. It's not Nick Saban or Brent Venables.

Blame Baker if you want but just remember he basically has the same players as last year minus 2 starting DTs. Without the horses you can’t pull the wagon. Off Line gets a share of the blame for pisspoor run blocking. Lacy gets some for acting a fool. Burns pulls his helmet off on the field!!! Are you kidding

Won't win many college football games against good or better teams scoring 20 these days. Defense wasn't perfect but they are not alone to blame for this loss.

Baker got completely trounced. That is the bottom line.

Our D was very soft on that last drive. And we gave up 7.7 yards per play in the game. Sorry, but that's bad.

It was the Prevent Offense that lost LSU this game.

Prevent defense, 3 man rush, typically prevents you from victory, as in this case.

The defense did well against a high powered offense, USC was 3-9 on 3rd downs. In this game the offense didn't hold up their end.

we gave up 450 yards on 7.7 yards per play. I don't think that's "doing well."

20 - 20 with 1:50 something left, yes we could've done better, but what we had last year there was improvement. 2nd and 8 from the 14, Anderson was in the flat it was a simple pitch and catch and Nuss throws a horrible incomplete pass, if completed with AA speed he at least gets a first down inside the 5, or maybe score, but we end up with 3. So many situations cost us especially them damn penalties. It wasn't the defense fault, this lost is on the team even the play calling.

USC scores 45 if Matt House were the DC. So, yeah the defense is better.

Before that TD our starting safety was just ejected and his replacement fall for the eye candy. The TE went in motion and he vacated the middle and play went right where he was suppose to be and he reacted to late. That's not Baker's fault players know their assignments and fail to accomplish them.

The only idea I agree with here is that LSU can’t be so damn stupid with how much money it throws at coaches, and how long LSU locks coaches in for with contracts. When it’s good it’s great but when it’s bad it’s bad for a long time. We don’t want to sit through a decade with a 8-4, 9-3, 7-5 expectation every year.

A Bama fan pointed out that LSU has failed to hold the opponent due to the prevent defense...Perhaps he has a point. (I thought I had the image of Les Miles pass before the TV Sunday night).

The defense usually tackles without hitting and wrapping/driving the ball carrier. The offensive man continues for extra yards after defensive contact. For technique/poor teaching. This occurs time after time.

On a side note: have they ruled that receivers' pushing off is not PI now? Is that a new rule adjustment that I missed? Seriously...I saw at least 20 push offs over the weekend and not ONE PI call on the offense, not one.

blaming refs is juvenile.

GTFOH Des....this is clickbait talk. Cleary he's doing too many commercials to know that this wasn't on the DC. Offensive play calling went from overdrive to 1st gear in the 2nd half. Look at the stats and know that in today's game...there is no shutdown defense. ESPN talking heads almost make watching them unbearable.

D did well. 3-9 on 3rd & 0-1 on 4th that is greatly improved from last yr. 22 rush att for 72yds!! Held, which will be top 10 offense to 20pts with 20 secs left in game. The D did there part.

You're cherry-picking stats. We gave up 7.7 yards per play. That's not good at all.
user avatar
biglego10 days
And you’re also cherry picking stats by repeating that yards per play stat over and over

When they said it would be a balanced team, I didn’t know it meant neither offense nor defense would be successful in the 4th quarter.
