College Football Insider Brett McMurphy of Action Network released College Football Bowl Projections this week before the upcoming season.

McMurphy predicts LSU to make the 12-team College Football Playoff as an 8-seed.

According to the prediction, LSU would play 9-seed Penn State in their first-round matchup at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge on Dec. 20. McMurphy has the Nittany Lions beating LSU and moving on to face Oregon in the Quarterfinals.
quote:

A quick reminder: the 12-team playoff debuts this year, as chosen by the College Football Playoff selection committee.

The five highest-ranked conference champions — regardless of ranking — receive an automatic bid to the playoff with the final spots going to the remaining seven highest-ranked teams.

The four highest-ranked conference champions receive byes into the quarterfinals and will be seeded Nos. 1-4 regardless of their selection committee ranking (even if they're “ranked” No. 3, 5, 12 and 24).

Projected College Football Playoff Field:
1. Oregon*
2. Alabama*
3. Miami*
4. Utah*
5. Ohio State
6. Georgia
7. Ole Miss
8. LSU
9. Penn State
10. Virginia Tech
11. Iowa
12. Texas State
Here's all the first-round matchup:

No. 8 LSU vs. No. 9 Penn State
Dec. 20 - Baton Rouge, LA

No. 5 Ohio State vs. No. 12 Texas State
Dec. 21 - Columbus, OH

No. 6 Georgia vs. No. 11 Iowa
Dec. 21 - Athens, GA

Dec. 21 - Oxford, MS

Did I miss a rule that said they can only have four teams from the SEC? Hard to see Iowa or Va Tech making it over a 10-2 Mizzou team.

I think Alabama is ranked too high. New HC, new staff, and a lot of holes to fill.

NIKE money pays for a lot of positive BS regarding anything related to Oregon. The Ducks are the most over-rated college football program in the history of college football.

In this sitch, I’m guessing the Conf Champ game was: Bama vs UGA, w/ UGA the higher ranked going into it. It’s could’ve been undefeated but lost to Bama, and essentially ended up with 5 total post season games to win a title, and then Bama, LSU & Ole Miss having 4 total games to win a title, giving Bama arguably the toughest route:

Bama: (UGA in CC) - OleMiss - UGA - ???
OleMiss: VaTech - Bama - UGA - ???
LSU: PennSt - Oregon - OSU - ???

*If LSU made the ???, Bama or UGA could end up playing 11 or 12 sec games to win a title ??

So Texas State but no Texas or A&M. That & LSU making the playoffs would be GLORIOUS!!

Bama @ 2 is complete nonsense. No way you logically rank a team that high with a new coach and all that they lost.

Alabama just can not be diminished. Saban gone, 2/3’s of the team left. New coach and new assistants.
Preseason ranks at the top.

Brian Kelly in year three at LSU is down at #8.

LoL.

Dec 20 is a FRIDAY. If LSU did host on Dec 20, it would be at night. Could be some real nasty weather at that time.

There are a few teams on that list that could come into Tiger Stadium for a playoff game and get a win. Penn State is not one of them

In a hypothetical scenario of LSU getting to the playoffs, their defense will have to be at least the bare minimum top 60. Penn St is not a high powered offense in the slightest and will have Death Valley in a playoff game. You wouldn't bet 100 bucks that LSU loses that game.

Love how everyone has bama as in, yet deboar hasn't coached in the SEC and has only been a true HC for what, 4yrs and at 2 different schools?

I mean yeah but you think Alabama isn't stock piled with Sunday guys? Who do you have beating them?

LSU, Tennessee, and UGA.

Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, and either Oklahoma, Missouri, or auburn. They have a very mediocre QB that can’t complete a pass unless a receiver is wide open or pushes off. They have no receiver that’s playing on Sundays while LSU, Tennessee, and Missouri got a stockpile of them. Defense doesn’t have Kevin Steele he’s replaced with a Sun Belt Defensive coordinator and a MAC DB coach that replaces T Rob and lost a lot in the secondary including generational talent at safety Caleb Downs. Offensive line is bad too they bring back most of their guys from last year and so many teams pushed that OL around a lot. On top of that the greatest coach in the history of the sport is no longer on the sidelines to make his notoriously amazing 2nd half adjustments. Now if bama is behind at halftime more likely than not they will lose almost every time now.

Former I-AA, FCS school that moved up to the Sun Belt Conference. They're a larger school than at least 5 SEC schools in student population. Small stadium (30,000+). Located in Texas with a large alumni base.
