Football Game Day Traffic Advisory

Closure of high-volume intersection could impact Vanderbilt-LSU game day traffic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Department of Transportation is advising fans to plan ahead on travel arrangements to the Vanderbilt campus for the Sept. 21 football matchup between the Commodores and LSU in light of the scheduled three-day closure of the I-65 and I-440 interchange located just south of downtown Nashville. The Commodores and Tigers are scheduled to kick off at 11 a.m. CT in Vanderbilt Stadium.

The I-65/440 intersection closure starts at 9 p.m. CT on Sept. 20, and continues until the morning of Sept. 23. U.S. Highway 31/Franklin Road, another key artery from Nashville to suburbs south of the city, also will be closed during the weekend.

Officials are urging out-of-town fans of both teams to arrive into Nashville, preferably north of I-440, on Friday prior to the closure.

The Commodores and Tigers are scheduled to kick off Sept. 21 at 11 a.m. CT, in Vanderbilt Stadium.

For fans residing south of the closed interchange, all other surface roads over I-440 will be open, including West End Avenue (Hwy. 70), Woodlawn Drive, 21st Avenue South (Hwy. 431), Belmont Boulevard, Granny White Pike/12th Avenue South), Lealand Lane, Bransford Avenue and Nolensville Road (Hwy. 41A).

Construction crews are closing the I-440 interchange at I-65 to place beams aimed at connecting two existing I-440 bridges spanning I-65.

When the closure is in effect, traffic moving toward the I-65/440 interchange will be reduced to one lane and detoured away from the construction area.

• Eastbound traffic on I-440 will be detoured to I-65 southbound.

• Westbound traffic on I-440 will be detoured to I-65 northbound.

• Northbound traffic on I-65 will be detoured to I-440 eastbound.

• Southbound traffic on I-65 will be detoured to I-440 westbound.

• Highway 31 (Franklin Road) will be closed from Berry Road to Woodmont Boulevard.

• Map with detour information is available here.

The rest of Nashville’s interstate road system, including Interstate 40 from Memphis and Knoxville, Interstate 24 from Chattanooga and Clarksville, and Interstate 840 routed around Nashville’s southern perimeter, will be free of construction during Sept. 20-23.

In the event of inclement weather, the alternate date for the I-440/I-65 interchange closure will be the weekend of Sept. 27-30.

From your desktop or mobile device, the latest construction information, alternative routes, and live streaming SmartWay traffic cameras are available at TNSmartWay.com/Traffic. Travelers can also dial 511 from any land-line or cellular phone for travel information.

Game Day Parking on Campus

Fans attending the Vanderbilt-LSU game can access two public garages on campus -- the 25th Avenue Garage (at intersection of 25th Ave. South and Highland Ave.) and West Garage (intersection of 25th Ave. South and Children’s Way) for $15 on game day. The garages will open at 8 a.m.

Vanderbilt will open the Natchez Trace surface lots on game day at 7 a.m. to Commodore season ticket holders who have purchased a parking pass. Starting at 8 a.m., a limited allotment of parking passes will be sold at $75 to the Natchez Trace surface lots.

LSU coming to play Vanderbilt is not top 20 for events in Nashville this year and they certainly aren't going to close it for 3 work days with commuter traffic, which is horrible as it is.
