Through two games this season, LSU has used several defensive backs in the secondary to get newcomers up to speed and fix the issues from last season.

On Monday, coach Brian Kelly said they will continue to rotate players as no one is at the level where they can play the whole game yet.

Kelly also said they were very happy with the play of Zy Alexander, who made his return vs. Nicholls following a season-ending knee injury in 2023.

"We have found that nobody is at a point where they can play 65-70 snaps," Kelly said. "We have to get our guys playing at the highest level but not playing that many snaps."

"I think Zy can play 30-35 snaps, but he will have to be spelled as well. I think you are going to see four corners playing; I think you will see 4 to 5 safeties playing. We are going to rely on depth of those units."
Kelly also said Alexander's return will allow Sage Ryan to stay at safety, where he can help the Tigers the most.
quote:

"He's a very versatile player for us. I think that is where he fits right now for us. The way Alexander is playing at the level he has, it makes sense to get Sage at safety."
Alexander played 34 snaps against Nicholls last Saturday. He was targeted five times, allowing two catches for five yards with 2 PBUs.

If Zy Alexander “will have to be spelled,” that sounds to me like he’s the new starter at CB.

We need a healthy Z Alexander back there at CB. Wish the light would go on for Toviano. I think he could help us too.
