LSU first-year defensive coordinator Matt House was named a [link=(r)]semifinalist for the Broyles Award on Monday,[/link] which is presented annually to the top assistant coach in college football.

During his weekly press conference, head coach Brian Kelly was asked if he was worried about House being poached away from LSU.

Q. Kind of piggybacking off of what Scott said, usually around here when a defensive coordinator has a lot of success, people try to cherry-pick him. Are you concerned about that at all?

BRIAN KELLY: No. If Matt House gets an opportunity where he thinks he is going to be better for it, I will help him in any way possible. I think that's part of this profession.

He has done an outstanding job. I don't know that Matt House came here to be the defensive coordinator for a year. He is going to have to run through his family and his wife. I think they like it here, but that's up to Matt.

But I would never be in the way of any of our coaches if they have an opportunity to move on to be a head coach, I would fully support them.

Kelly should give a class on how to answer every question, predictable or otherwise, in a presser.

If you are referring to his predecessors, I'm not certain they would adequately comprehend what is being said, let alone effectively replicate it.

It is his political background. I've managed 9 political campaigns, coaching candidates how to talk to the media. He is great.

Both of his sons play football at Dunham. I'm pretty sure one is a Senior and the other a Freshman. Hopefully that helps to keep him around a few years but either way, he's earned whatever his next steps end up being.

I don’t know why he would want to stick around to coach Masson and Harold next year haha

He’d be crazy not to want to coach this D again for at least 2 more years.

Young difference makers at all 3 levels of the defense. Even the Top-10 programs struggle with guys leaving early early and the portal to get that consistently now. Smith, Wiggins, Jones, Wingo, Hill, and Womack on the DL. Perkins, Tolan, Penn, and Weeks at backer. On the back end I still believe in Ryan, obviously the staff really like Welch and Burns, then add in potentially Ricks, Austin, Toviano, and Jackson.

Coaching this defense for 2 more years will probably get him an "Aranda like" job offer.

He is a better recruiter than Aranda and with our offensive style it is one of the best DC jobs for the money, offensive style to play off of, and talent.

Sounds like he doesn't want to be a HC and we're paying him "frick you" money down here...

maybe not poached, but not sounding confident in him staying around either. even if we see it coming, that man been a stud of a DC and it'll hurt to lose him.

Maybe he feels like LSU is a "destination" seeing as we went from 6-7 to a Top 5 team in one year?
user avatar
Coastrashtiger17 months
@dennistracy There are 3 or 4 jobs that he has ties to that would concern me in the next 2-3 years. But if he gets looks at places such as Michigan State(I know the buyout is prohibitive now), Pitt, Kentucky and UNC, that means he continued to do well at LSU. The NFL DC looks would concern me more than the college head jobs.

Regardless of the last 2 games House has been excellent at LSU. Seeing a DC (or any coach really) make halftime adjustments that improve the team shot at winning has been a welcome change over the last cpl regimes.
