Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports
Athlon Sports spoke with several anonymous SEC coaches who happen to think that former LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda leaving in the offseason to be the head coach at Baylor might not hurt the Tigers...
quote:

"Dave Aranda is gone, but that's probably the best for both parties."

"I think you saw a few times where Dave's scheme was so intricate it was overwhelming the players, especially if they had some depth issues or were banged up. Bo Pelini is going to live nicely with Ed."

"The caliber of athlete they have doesn't need to overthink it. Four down, pin your ears back and go. Ed wants to go four down. If you can recruit killers, let 'em work."
New defensive coordinator Bo Pelini was hired this offseason to replace Aranda.

Stop saying down south players etc etc, most of LSU players and recruits are from all over the place not just the South!!!

I’m just worried Bo’s scheme is outdated. LSU has never had a coordinator leave for 13 years, then come back to that same position.

I think we'll get beat on the back end for big plays from time to time but the sack and 3 and out numbers will sky rocket

Well results speak for themselves. Aranda's D best year was 30th or so in the nation. Bo had three straight in the top 3. Aranda was solid, not great. I think Bo can be great.

Is he saying players from the South are dumber than Midwestern boys? He performed miracles at Wisky and helped LSU win the natty. How many players in the league? Not overrated.

I think what is being discussed is at times “thought” isn’t always needed when u have the caliber of athletes we have. Let em run downhill and make the tackle. Not that complicated

That's exactly what they're saying. The scheme worked just fine at Wisconsin but was too complicated for the caliber of player LSU recruits. With that type of player, get em lined up and let them play.

I can’t believe some fans think Aranda wasn’t the real deal and overrated. Aranda was actually underrated after some piled on him last year. When the offense is motorboating every team, the defense is gonna be on the field way more. Add injuries and points are gonna be scored.

That 2019 unit was filthy when it was healthy and locked in at the end of the season. What that D was able to do to OU and Clemson was big time.

I thank Dave Aranda for his time with and service to the LSU Tigers.

WHoever this SEc Coach is who made this statement, he is 100% accurate. Aranda never lived up to the hype or his paycheck precisely because of what this guy says...and now with pelini here, he is a really good fit....we really may have best Defense in college football this year

Great guy but was a bit over rated. We shall see how he does as a HC. His D may have been better suited for the NFL.

Aranda was awesome in the Natty game. Great adjustments.

Why did they not make that comment when he was still here? Our D has been great for all the years he was with us. He is so much better than chief and Steele. Let me guess who made those comments--the losers over at A&M and Ole Miss.

I bet if you ask every coach in the SEC if they would rather have Aranda or Pelini 80 - 90% of them will say Pelini. His style with the type of athletes the elite programs in the SEC recruit are a perfect match. Aranda's finesse D is better suited to the Pac-12.

Completely disagree. It was painfully obvious they were told to bend not break last year, and once they started going more aggressively, they started dominating. Chaisson was not an elite pass rusher, and a lot of our defensive linemen never really progressed as pass rushers. I'm not a fan of this "Dave Aranda was not elite" thing that's been going around lately, dude literally carried this team for multiple years.

“Chaisson was not an elite pass rusher” - Right, cause he’d have been a1st Round NFL Draft choice IF only he’d have been “ELITE”

In a 3-4 the D-line is not going to be elite pass rushers. I promise you Coach O was not telling Dave to play bend but don't break defense. That is not O's style at all. That would be like saying Miles had a 150 IQ and we all know that is not the case.

Aranda was an ok defensive coordinator but I never felt he was worth all the godlike talk on the rant. Last year's defense was, at times, barely good enough for the win. Offense let the defense off the hook more last year. Later in the year they seemed to somewhat get their crap together, but I wasn't really sad to see Aranda go. I wish him the best.

I agree with erything you just said except i don't wish him the best; he poached a lot of lsu coaches and has been caught trying to steal lsu players and recruits as well

Bo is back! Dave was great while he was here, but, his scheme sometimes not only fooled the opposing offense, but had his players confused as well...

I remember the days with the negaOs said the only reason O still had his job was because he “inherited” aranda. Good times.
