On Friday afternoon, the LSU Board Of Supervisors approved the decision to name the basketball court at the PMAC after former men's coach Dale Brown. Per The Advocate:

quote:

From now on, Brown's name will grace the floor during basketball games inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The vote passed 12-3 after more than two hours of the meeting was devoted to discussion of the resolution and two substitute motions were presented in the midst of the sometimes heated debate.

Before the vote, multiple supporters of Brown spoke on behalf of the resolution, including former players Rudy Macklin and Ricky Blanton. Board member Glenn J. Armentor, one of the staunchest advocates for the motion, said supportive letters also came from former LSU coach Johnny Jones, sportscaster Bob Costas and former LSU basketball player Shaquille O'Neal.

“It didn’t look good,” Knight said. “In fact, my assistants had just about given up, and so had I. Then I looked down toward the other bench, and I saw Dale Brown standing there. I knew then that we had a chance.”

It's pretty obvious that those who are adamantly opposed to the naming of the court for Dale Brown have no memory of what LSU basketball was before his arrival. The only two shining lights in the program prior to Coach Brown's taking the helm were Bob Pettit's years in 1951-54, and Maravich's varsity years. And people didn't even come to watch LSU play basketball when Maravich played. They came to see Maravich. Dale Brown built LSU basketball from the ground up and created the expectation that LSU could compete nationally with anyone.

no way this would have come up for a vote if the decision hadn't been made already. the vote was a formality, by the same characters who got johnny jones the job. from a person whose greatest experiences as a fan (other than 97/07 florida FB and the 2019 Burrow natty) were the 81/86 FF teams and Derrick Taylor's half court shot to beat Auburn and the entire CJ era (didn't miss a BB game from age 5 until i went to college in 91), I am NOT in favor of this. DB is a DB. I thought he was a DB when I was NINE. I appreciated his passion but hated his ego and was shocked at his X and O ineptitude (thank God for Tex). Dale panders to a certain group who in turn panders to him. He's got his positive qualities, but appreciating the University and the LSU BB program over himself? That's not one of them.

So What’s left to name basketball wise after someone who actually wins something? I get Pete’s name being on the building but why name something after someone who hasn’t won shite? What if will Wade wins a final four or 6 and when he retires from LSU in 30 years. What is there left to name after him?

Naming university assets and erecting statues should be reserved for the deceased.

Who would oppose this? Not the best coach ever but put LSU Basketball on the map and has been a great ambassador to LSU

Wrong. He's been undermining the program for last 2 decades.

Yeah, all you downvoters know more than Rudy Macklin, Ricky Blanton, Johnny Jones, Bob Costas, and Shaquille O'Neal.
