Tom Skinner, LSU's general counsel provided some comments to Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated in response to Will Wade's statement on Thursday morning requesting to be reinstated by the school. Here is what Skinner had to say:
quote:

The school responded to Wade’s statement Thursday during an interview with Sports Illustrated. “In everything that’s been said by Will and his folks in the past week, not once have they denied any wrongdoing,” says Tom Skinner, the school’s general counsel. “As a university and employer, we need to hear our employee say, ‘I didn’t do anything wrong,’ or explain the circumstances or admit he did do something wrong. We’ve been unable to get to that point. We have no choice, in terms of institutional control, to not suspend someone.”

“The phrase institutional control is tossed around, but the shorthand version is the NCAA wants universities to have control over their programs,” Skinner says. “They want those universities to have procedures and follow those procedures. If there’s potential wrongdoing that arises, what’d the university do to stop that wrongdoing and take appropriate action? In this case, there have been allegations made via the media of some improper activity. We want to meet with him about it. We have to demonstrate we’ve taken appropriate action.”

Except when the institution is completely handling things wrong where other institutions handled it right. Someone needs to lose their job over this. FKing has thrown gas on this fire, whether or not it came from him or the BOS, he was the one that directed Alleva. They all need to go.

while I agree with you, too much CYA is well ... too much. Some of these attorneys are total snowflakes.

"we need to hear our employee say, ‘I didn’t do anything wrong,’ or explain the circumstances or admit he did do something wrong" - - Chickenshit response. You suspend him on hearsay and now he has the burden to prove his innocence rather than you proving his guilt

Kinda reminds a person of a certain event at Duke University involving the men's lacrosse team, doesn't it?

It’s a little more than hearsay when the FBI has subpoenaed someone with evidence from a wire tap. The council is doing the right thing.

Im just sitting back hoping somebody finally gets fired over all of this. The PR hit for LSU is going to be to hard to overcome for Alleva and King.

Why not just tell him to stop doing what he is accused of doing? The accusations are related to a conversation that happened a year ago, so what is the university going to do now that would change that? This is complete bullshite.

Ross does consider himself a journalist, does he not? All Ross Dellenger needed to ask Tom Skinner is "If Will Wade was your client, and was innocent, would you suggest he discuss legal matters involving his upcoming Federal Court Testimony in advance of that testimony?" When Skinner answered "no', the f/u would be "Well then Tom, why did you request Wade do just that?"

I am no lawyer but testifying your innocence will void your 5th amendment right i believe. You cant testify and plead a case of innocences and not be cross examined. That is the entire point of the 5th amendment. If this is the counsel LSU is using they need to fire them and get some real lawyers

"I or we have never, ever done business of any kind with Christian Dawkins. That’s what I’ll say about that." - Will Wade

I was saying this in response to them saying Wade has never denied wrongdoing.

Good enough for me... reinstate him!

It sure sounded like he at least tried to do business with him, though he may have backed out from using Dawkins when he felt he was wasn’t getting the job done. He obviously found a way, though. Do you honestly believe that the Dawkins deal fell through and Wade did not funnel money to Smart’s mom, and then Smart committed for free? Y’all are delusional!

Other than the Media, Tom, whenhas Will Wade been formally charged with participating in a recruiting violation? Asking him to declare his innocence to a non-charge based on innuendo is ridiculous.

Say dindu nuffin or sumpin' - you just can't go back in after a time out. Either claim innocence or plead guilty.

If LSU was [say] Vanderbilt this season, would the article even have been advanced at this time by "Yahoo Sports" [?] If not, has "Yahoo Sports" tampered in some manner [either with tournament outcomes, recruiting efforts of future athletes, decision outcomes of existing players? If Wade is never charged, there should be something actionable against "Yahoo Sports" and the author.

Punish the news outlet for a story you don’t like? That’s some Banana Republic rationale there.
user avatar
atltiger648761 months
yes it would be front page news if Vandy's head coach was caught on tape, twice, saying what Wade said.

Wade: I am within my rights to not make definitive statements due to ongoing federal investigation LSU: why won’t you make definitive statements on the matter?!
user avatar
atltiger648761 months
"Wade: I am within my rights to not make definitive statements due to ongoing federal investigation".... of course Wade is within his rights not to talk. And LSU is within its rights to suspend him, given the tapes and Wade's refusal to speak. Just because someone chooses to zip their lip doesn't mean everyone around them is handcuffed. LSU should, and did, take appropriate action. It's just shocking this board is so blinded by winning that they can't see what's rational.

alttiger, are you really shocked? While there are a few, this message board does not consist of a lot of highly intelligent folks. The simpletons make decisions mostly off of emotions rather than logic.

Unless more tapes exist that haven’t been made public nothing needs to be said. Wade said nothing illegal or violated NCAA rules in any of those transcripts. Let’s hope they have more and if they don’t I hope Wade cleans them out in a lawsuit.

Sad to say I won't be giving any money to my alma mater for the foreseeable future. Tickets or annual donations. Offended and insulted at their mishandling of the situation. Will Wade and J. Smart should bring legal action against our own Athletic Department as they are essentially smearing their names without any proof to justify what they're doing. If the allegations come out as true, then may Joe Alleva be viewed as a racist slave driver robbing his student athletes of their worth and CWW be seen as a Saint trying to help these kids and their families.
