The LSU Tigers had a lot to prove after a less than stellar trip to the Virgin Islands. The Tigers left the Paradise Jam 1-2 and in need of a defensive identity. If last night was any indication, the Tigers may have found one.

LSU held UMASS to a season low 60 points. They only allowed 37.7% field goals and 15.4% from three point range. They also outrebounded the Minutemen 41 to 32. LSU blocked a season high 10 shots, led by Jordan Mickey's 5 blocks, and the Tigers forced 18 turnovers while allowing only 6 assists.

On offense, LSU was led by point guard Josh Gray, who finished the game with 25 points on 11/15 shooting, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. He was 3/4 from three point range and was able to get into the lane almost at will. As a team, LSU hit nearly 54% of their field goals. They shot over 50% in both halves.

LSU nearly had 5 players score in double figures with Gray (25), Mickey (16), Quarterman (15), Martin (12), and Hornsby (9). Jordan Mickey had yet another double-double adding 10 rebound and 5 blocks to his total. LSU also got good minutes from senior John Odo who played good defense on UMASS leading scorer Cady Lalanne before fouling out.

Off the bench, Tim Quarterman has become a force both offensively and defensively. He hit 2 of his 4 three point attempts and dished 3 assists to go along with his 3 steals. He is now averaging 10.6 points per game and has a 1.6 AST:TO ratio.

LSU definitely did not play a flawless game. They had 19 turnovers in the game, which won't be okay in their next game at #16 West Virginia. Still, they allowed only 0.77 points per possession which is their best of the season. If they continue to defend like they did against the Minutemen and get to the rim like they were able to last night, the Tigers can contend for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.

Geaux Tigers!

As was I. Team played with confidence and aggression that I haven't seen all year.
