Clearly self-defense caused by fear since Joe’s first reaction was to raise his arms in defense, bob his head to confuse the attacker, and step back to create a safe space. Oh wait - he didn’t do any of those things. At least he realized that his cat-like reflexes caused an injury and he went into action to help the injured patron. Nah, he didn’t do that either.
