Nick Saban Has This One Issue With College Football Playoff Expansion
© Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports
With a new 6-16 team playoff format that reportedly wouldn’t go into effect until after the 2021 or 2022 season, Alabama head coach Nick Saban is still not a fan of College Football Playoff expansion...
quote:

“I think the playoff, as I said many years ago when we had just two teams in the playoff and expanded to four, that the more playoffs we have the less significant bowl games are going to be,” Saban said on The Paul Finebaum Show. “It’s really not for me, and I don’t even think I’m capable of judging how significant the positive self-gratification that players, programs, and coaches get from being able to go to a bowl game. Now, everything has shifted to the four teams in the playoffs, and the bowls seem to be pretty insignificant. I think if we expand the playoff, you’re going to see a continuation of that trend where the bowl games become less and less significant. Maybe these things can’t coexist. If they’re going to coexist, maybe we should try to leave them pretty much the same.”

“I know there is a lot of interest in the playoff, but the other thing I would be concerned with is how many games do we need to play?” Saban said. “The SEC Championship Game, if you look at it, most of the years we played in those games were playoff games. We were playing somebody in the top five. It had an impact on who got in the playoff or championship game. So, you’re going to eliminate that so you can have more playoff games? Are we going to play less games in the regular season so we can have more playoff games? I think there’s only so many games in these guys. They’re student-athletes. They’re not just football players. I think some of that has to be taken into consideration as well.”

If you want people and players to start appreciating bowl games, get rid of half of them and stop having 6-6 and 7-5 teams in them. 8-4 should be the lowest requirement for a bowl game. Also, let those sponsors fight money wise for who gets first pick and do it like a fantasy draft for selecting teams. Create matchups no one has seen before or in a long while. Hell, do a draft show where the bowl picks a representative to go on and they do a draft lotto for team picks. "The Outback bowl will get first selection in this year's bowl game."

bowls are private, not run by the NCAA or the conferences. You and I could start a bowl, if we wanted to.

He was right before they went to 4 teams, and he's right now.

Coming for a guy that has won two natty's with no conference/division titles!

And??? The point of the bcs was to put the best teams against each other. Same with playoffs. It's not his fault the 2nd and 3rd best sec teams are better than other conference champs.

We need an 8 team playoff, and do away with conference championships. Nobody cares about conference championships anymore, and like Saban said, they usually involve two teams that would be in an 8 team playoff anyway. Have the playoff games be played in bowl game venues, and allow the bowl games to have the same name with their logo instead of the playoff logo. Problem solved. If you don't get gratification from being outside of the top 8, that's good. Work hard in the offseason.

Last I checked the smaller colleges have a pretty good playoff system in place.

They do but they have no bowl games, which is pretty much what CNS said.

FCS has 24 playoff teams - far too many for FBS. But it works for FCS because of no bowl games.

The playoffs hasn't hurt the bowls so much as the overwhleming number of them. Cut the bowls in half (and stop naming them stupid corporate names like the 'Cheeze-it Bowl') and they'll mean something again.

With all the opt-outs of pretty much exhibition games, how much to Bowl games really matter anyway?

Nailed it. None of the studs who are draft eligible play unless it is the playoffs, I think you might keep more of the top guys playing if you expand it... and that is what we all want to see

How often does the #4 seed get blown out? 4 teams are fine.

Take the four BCS bowls and make it an eight team playoff. Power 5 champs get in along with three wildcards. Problem solved.

Bowl games do not make money. CFB has become all about $$$ and unfortunately bowl games are going to be sacrificed just like the in stadium fan experience for fans in the cheap seats was sacrificed over the past 15 years or so.

We DO NOT need more playoff teams.

The bowl games in warm climes will still do fine. Some of the others not so well.

Unless they are your team that may go 6-6.

First, conference championships died with the bcs, were then cremated with the cfp. If u put in conference champs only u water down the cfp mightily. Yea, we want to see 8-3 Washington against 8-3 Texas. The idea of the cfp is to put the 4 best teams in. Conference titles mean nothing now. 2nd, nobody blames the kids that quit. The meineke car care bowl never meant anything but drew breed played anyway. Nationwide recruiting helped kill this. Once upon a time, most of your players were from your state. They had pride. One more time in that uniform. That's gone hence the pride has gone with players playing for Texas that are from Pennsylvania, etc.

I always liked the BCS. Every regular season game was extremely important. I wasn't in favor of the 4 team playoff, but I was okay with it since it was only 4 teams and every game still mattered big-time. But it can't go further than that. A 16 team playoff would be ridiculous. It would completely water down everything from the regular season to bowls. It would be horrific.

College football needs to decide what it wants to be. A multi-billion dollar industry approaching the popularity of the NFL, or an amateur athletics league with illegitimate champions. So much money now in college football. The NCAA isn’t quite sure how to proceed.
